Am I stupid or does any one else pick early blossoms?
Comments (10)great topic! this year i had a mislabeling mishap with my seeds. long story short to figure out whick was which (i knew which plants were the same because they were side by side) i had several pairs of plants. i would let one of the plants flower and pluck the others flowers. did this across the board with them all. anyway the ones i let fruit i only let a few pods set (2-6) and picked the rest. what i saw after plucking flowers about 3 times. the plucked plants were much bigger and brachier. the unplucked plants seemsed to stall in comparison. not much growth after the pods set. imo it takes time to pluck flowers and more time each time you do it. i simply refused to pluck my lemon drop after the 2nd time. to friggin many to pluck. i also did this with 2 savina cuttings and the difference there was crazy. i will add with the savinas the plucked got lots of nitrogen as well. i dont know about tomatoes but with peppers it will give you bigger yeilds from what i have seen. Comments (35)David, our last frost date here is May 15th. I'll probably start putting them out the third or fourth week of May, but if the weather doesn't cooperate it's no big deal since they're out in the greenhouse anyways, and I'll just keep potting them up until it's safe to plant them out. I really wanted them to get a good head-start this year which is why I started so early. Last year we had to wait until August before any of the tomatoes even put on fruit...so this year, we decided to get a head start, and see if we couldn't get things producing a bit sooner. I planted out small seedlings at the end of May last year, so I thought maybe if I had bigger plants ready to go out at the same time this year, we'd have fruit earlier. Hopefully that will work. I'd really like to have tomatoes to enjoy *before* the growing season is almost over!...See MoreEarly blight on fruit only? Something else?
Comments (13)Yes, I think calling the extension agent is a good idea. The one in Cheyenne is more focused on trees; the one in Denver actually has a little bit of information on tomato diseases and mentions TSWV. Common Tomato Problems A cloud of thrips? How horrid. I just read that thrips and broad/fava beans go hand in hand. I have half a row of favas right next to this tomato row... Regarding the BER, yes, there's been a little while I've been trying to learn to water properly with black plastic down this year. I'm not positive if the triplet and the single above have BER, too, or if the rot from the cankers (for lack of a better word) has converged. From Cornell's Fact Sheet: Although an early study reported seed transmission of TSWV at a high rate in Cineraria and tomato, a later study found only 1 percent infection. The virus is present only in the seed coat and not in the embryo. Seed transmission is thus not considered important for disease spread. Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Regarding the leaves, most everything I read today stated the problem starts with the leaves. I wonder if the problem generally starts earlier in the season, though, when there aren't any fruit present. Either way, if it is TSWV, I imagine it's just the beginning of the end here. I appreciate everyone's input. If I learn something helpful from the extension agent(s) tomorrow, I'll post it here....See MoreHoliday Break Lighting Vote Anyone?
Comments (37)Oh wow mlweaving! Thank you so much - I think I'd hug you right now if you were near so just accept my virtual hug. I tried doing that last night a little but your mock up looks much better! Thank you thank you thank you! Mlweaving SIDE NOTE: So since you have seen the ming green back splash tile with my door samples, do you think I can pull that off with this fireplace stone? I am loving the crackle tile of romy and others as well but yikes $$$. illini-it is called silas. It's a gray stain so you can still see the brown of the wood through it. The wood samples I had with it showed just how much the different woods species took the stain. That is when I changed from alder to hickory. Alder looked 'muddy' for lack of a better word. Cherry was alright but I was afraid of the red coming through too much as it aged, so hickory it was! gothaml-thank you! I hope it all pulls together. I am finding building to have many achilles heals...yeesh. dutty- It is our only dining space so it is an eat in kitchen of sorts but it's separated enough I think that it has its own boundaries. See the floor plan pic below and let me know what you think. So right off - the lights I have been trying to avoid - #3 and #4 I do not like so they are back out. I agree, definitely matchy matchy but missed and the mock up really shows it so thanks once again Marjorie! Yay as I didn't really want to use one and I am glad they didn't get any votes. ;) I want something different but yet we are still casual as I think the stone suggests. So looking at the pics I think something different works much better - either drum or the chandelier with the candelabra lights. I don't mind option X either though. Maybe a bit different in style but looking at it I think if I go different style completely than the pendants I can pull off a different finish. I do like the chandelier now that I see it in the space. I actually think it looks less formal than the more formal drum #4 from the original choices. That by the way (drum #4) is at the top of budget ON SALE. So I'd need to act pretty quickly if I want to go that way. I think the sale ends 12/31. Drum #1 is within budget for sure but had some sketchy reviews on shade color being yellowish (alarm alarm) and being a pain to hang but dh is handy so I'm not to bothered by that part. I am going to do a little bit more looking at the candelabra type lights and see if I find anything else I like better. Mlweaving - I'll let you know if I find another I'd like dropped into the mock up. Thank you for offering. Here is that area of the house with dims (note kitchen is not designed in this pic): Range wall: This is final and what it will look like standing in the living area and looking at the kitchen. I am going to surf some more and I'll come back. Thanks to all of you for weighing in. I appreciate it more than you know. Lisa...See Morecattyles
