Am I stupid or does any one else pick early blossoms?

I've been taught that on tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, any blossoms should be picked off until the plant reaches a decent size. I mentioned this on the tomato forum and all responses had the tone, "why are you doing such a dumb thing."

Does anyone do this to their larger fruited peppers? If so, how large do you let them get before you stop plucking flowers. My Big Chiles are about 15", but not very bushy. They are setting blossoms now, but if it would increase my yield further down, I'll pick off the flowers.
