Shows Us Your Gardens - a Photo Thread - November 2014
Comments (24)We were in one of the harder hit areas in last week's storm, so our Thanksgiving was snowy and without power or phone at our house, but happily my inlaws' power was restored part way through the morning. We had trees down on power lines and in the road, and even one power pole broken by a tree further down the road. From Thanksgiving 2014 Here is the way the dogwood outside the kitchen window looked at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. From Thanksgiving 2014 And here it is Thanksgiving morning, bent down to perhaps 4'. Happily the branches weren't much damaged when I released them, though between this storm and the one at Halloween two years ago, this tree is rather misshapen by now. From Thanksgiving 2014 The lilacs looked fairly similar, but had a lot of broken branches as well. From Thanksgiving 2014 Despite the problems caused by the weight of the snow, there were spots of beauty as well. The red maples looked like some type of unusual weeping tree From Thanksgiving 2014 and the sunlight creeping onto the trees along the riverbank was lovely. Comments (38)tim, it's been a while since we chatted. Your yuccas are really spectacular! I lost a few things this past winter. Here I think it was that we had quite a mild season right through January, then February got to what I consider "normal" cold, up until Valentine's Day. Then we got hit with minus 9 degrees (!) all of a sudden overnight and only a high of 12 degrees the next day and then back below zero for a couple of more nights, Most plants weren't hardened off enough by a normal, gradual cooling. My 7 foot camellia was reduced to a 10-inch stump, although it's recovered and has a lot of new growth. But I doubt that I'll have any flower for a year or two. And if we get another really cold spell, well, who knows? My Magnolia "Bracken's Brown Beauty" came through fine, as did all of the cacti and Hesperaloe ("Red Yucca" - not a true yucca). Gardenia "Frostproof" was covered with a styrofoam cooler and was mostly OK when I uncovered it in spring. I would love to grow that hardy ginger. Could you tell me more about it, such as the species, and where you bought it?...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - December 2016
Comments (16)Very striking scenes, NHBabs, with colors so different from the exuberant colors of a few months ago. There's a quietness about them that's very calming. We got significant snow yesterday and last night, and I thought I should show how my house looks now to compare with the photo I posted at the beginning of this thread. The junipers and grasses are mostly squashed down by the snow. This morning as the sun was rising the shadows marked the snow on the deck. And the bay is always in motion. As I was busily shoveling the paths I hit a roadblock - at least one rose in the alley was bent over by the snow and I couldn't get by without getting shredded and I couldn't get close enough to shake off all of the snow and push the rose back up. I'll wait until it warms up enough to melt the snow and, if I can't get the rose back in place (unlikely) I'll do some serious pruning. We had somewhere between 12 and 17 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and it's turning cold now. I noticed the snow is creaking when I walk on it - which is unusual for here on the relatively warm coast where snow is more likely to squish than creak. Comments (16)The frosted windshield is lovely, NHBabs, and on the hydrangea heads too! Frosting is always a gift, like Mother Nature is hanging around with a spatula in her hand spreading frosting on the world. I wanted to show a houseplant - pictures from November 4. This is Schlumbergera 'Christmas Fantasy' which is the last of my Christmas cacti. I think I mentioned earlier that the mice were chewing on my Christmas cacti. Plants I'd had for years were dying off. By the time I realized that the mice were probably involved, the others were gone and this one was badly gnawed on. I covered it and it's recovering, but it still needs protection. Schlumbergera 'Christmas Fantasy' 11/4/20 uncovered: And this is what it really looks like in my house: Schlumbergera 'Christmas Fantasy protected: Claire...See Morecorunum z6 CT
