Confused about low voltage LED undercabinet lighting

Help! I know nothing about electric work, and I'm confused about under cabinet lighting. We're in the middle of a gut reno of our kitchen, rough electric has already been done, and the walls are still open, but I need to decide shortly. I was looking at low voltage LED under cabinet strip lights (dimmable), but the electrician is telling me that these are very expensive and difficult to install. Is this true? The lighting store insists that it's very easy, 24V and they have transformers that can be hidden in a cabinet or the basement. The electrician suggests direct wire 120V LED, but these seem so bulky (some of the lights will need to be under floating shelves). Electrician says 120 direct wire is significantly cheaper install ($200), vs the low voltage ($800ish). Does this seem correct? If this is the case, I may need to reconsider, or maybe think about plug in.
