My wonderful umbrella plant (Schifflera) started putting out sap a few months ago and it covers the leaves....on one side of the plant. Is it to protect itself from possible cat bites? Doesn't look healthy for the plant.

What to do? Anything that I can do to keep this sap from forming and covering leaves?
