Our new milk cow...
Comments (25)Leslie, I have 70 - something chickens. Of those, 6 are roos. NO ONE has gone broody, yet! I can't believe it! Which is really okay, because I havn't done any specific breeding, and don't think I want the bloodlines of two of my roos, anyway. I don't know enough about the genetics yet, so I'm just taking it day by day for now. Now, that count of 70+ does NOT include the 8 chicks I have stashed and hidden while brooding in my garage. Yep, I went to the feed store, and left with 3 White Japanese Banties, 2 white silkies, and 3 red (I think) frizzles! I'm sooo excited about them. I've even bought a tiny coop for them all, and managed to keep it hidden from DH for about 2 weeks. I'm gonna be mud when he finds out, but it won't be the first time! As for my OTHER babies, we have registered Blank Angus: 3 cows, and their 3 heifers that came with them. That is our original, beginning herd. Then along came my Punkin. Then the cows had their calfs, (2 heifers and a little bull - they are Adam, Eve, and Tinkerbell) So, that makes a total of 10. In February, we bought a young bull for this years breeding, and his friend, a 12 yr old Angus who hadn't yet been bred back. The man we buy from was going to take her to the sale barn...but we decided to give her another chance. Very sweet cow...named Valentine! That's actually part of her registered name, too. I hoped she'd adopt Punkin, but no, not yet, anyway. So, a total of 12 bovine ornaments for my petting zoo. Two donkies, 10 goats now, and as of yesterday...down to 3 ducks. Something got my male Pekin. Heartbreaking... I'd love a milk cow, but probably not a wise idea until we actually LIVE on our farm! At my house where we do live we also have our 2 Labs, Buck and Tootsie Roll. I need to post pics of them, too. I mean to every day, but there's just too much to do! Lesli, again, where in Texas are you? Suzie...See MoreWould you get either 1 cow or goats?
Comments (23)hpw, I don't have any numbers, but I don't doubt that some US citizens become ill from food-borne illnesses contracted from consuming 'raw foods' every year; but, I suspect they're fairly low in number, and since the vast majority of people in this country get ALL of their food from the grocery store or restaurants and the minimal numbers of folks doing the raw thing, the small numbers of illnesses are probably sporadic and random, not triggering an epidemiologic investigation by FDA and CDC. When we have a situation like the recent Salmonella outbreak which FDA 'finally' traced back to Mexican-origin peppers(Duh! They're largely a third-world country with poor to nonexistant sewage/water treatment facilities in much of the nation, and it's likely that the farm workers aren't provided toilet facilities, so they are probably 'relieving themselves' right there in the fields), in which a large quantity of contaminated foodstuffs from a single source are widely distributed across the nation, then we get large numbers of persons affected. I would have no qualms whatsoever about consuming raw milk from my own personal cow - because she would have been tested negativefor brucellosis/TB, and *I* would be in charge of every aspect of cleanliness and sanitation from udder prep and monitoring for evidence of mastitis to refrigeration of the 'finished product'. But, I wouldn't necessarily trust anyone else purveying raw milk to take the same care that I would. There is no doubt that milk is a healthy food, but the claims that raw milk is so vastly superior to pasteurized milk are without rational scientific basis, and it's ludicrous to make claims that pasteurization completely destroys milk's nutritional content, and in fact renders it into a toxic substance....See More1/4 sawn oak floor with 1/4 sawn oak base cabinets?
Comments (4)Too funny! I'm in Vancouver as well and just finishing my white uppers, rift cut oak lowers, kitchen. Similar vintage house. We have new white oak quarter/rift floors everywhere on the main floor, but went with a darker ceramic floor tile in the kitchen. The oak of the lowers works well with the oak floors in the adjacent dining room. I think the darker tile floor works to break things up a little, in a good way. The counters are madreperola quartzite, with a taupe that picks up the tones of the wood, and greens that pick up the tones of the kitchen floor. Plain white subway backsplash that closely matches the white uppers. Overall, really happy. Hopefully I'll be posting pics in the next week or two. Having seen it, I can reassure you that the combo of white uppers and white oak lowers is gorgeous. You'll love it....See More5 1/4 or 7 1/4 base trim
Comments (17)One of my fav places is Puerto Vallarta and we go there alot so I always bring things home and I am going to try and put some of Mexico in the pool area . But I don't want to go all theme like . I stained the concrete floors in the pool area and they turned out great . Currently they are doing the drywall in that room and they had to scaffold over the pool so everything is a huge mess and then we will have to paint so I probably won't have pics for atleast a few weeks . Also I am not very good at uploading photos here - I think I am going to have to get one of those photo hosting sites to put my pictures on . Are there any free ones you guys can recommend ? Thanks...See More- 10 years ago
