From yesterday's hike...the oldest castle in Connecticut...it's slated for demolition as no one can afford to fix it...

Annie...I didn't think they'd finalized any demolition plans for the castle. Did I miss something? I know it's now a "no trespass" structure but I thought they were still working on a solution other than tearing it down. What a loss if demolition is the case. It has such a wonderful history and used to attract visitors from all over the globe at one time.

Annie, Is that Gillette castle? I sure hope not, loved to visit there.

No, it's hearthstone castle...gillette's is still fine.

Sounds like they are going to try to preserve a wall, but they have to figure out how much of a wall and how to stabilize it and how to keep it from becoming a climbing wall with associated dangers. But it will no longer be a building. As it is now, I can see how hazardous it is...looking inside, it's amazing the graffiti is in places where it is, and people have climbed inside and had to be rescued. The interior floors have completely collapsed and there's been a fire.

How sad! No matter how old I get...I shall never understand the passion some people have for defacing and destroying such properties. Thank you, Annie, for identifying the castle. I used to meander all through this State when I had better eyesight but don't ever remember seeing Hearthstone. Obviously...I should have looked harder.
