1990 Jetta: Replacing rusted out bottom of car

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi folks,

I'm interested in knowing whether I can save the underside of my VW
Jetta. This is an area that I've long neglected since it's not easily
viewable. I know that this area, under my car, is really rusted. I'm
very interested in determining whether I can rescue this part of my car.

I placed an ad in my local Craigslist, looking for someone who can fix
my car's underside. One response was from someone who recommended this
mechanic who does regular mechanic work and auto body work. I took my
car to his place last Wednesday. When he placed my car on a lift I
snapped a number of photos so that you can see how my car looks like at
the bottom. The photos are below. I first want you to see how the bottom
of my car looks like before I post another post on this thread,
explaining the estimate that this mechanic gave me to restore the bottom
of my car.

Finally, what would really help me is to know whether, given the photos
of my car's underside, I should let this mechanic weld whatever metals
he has onto my car's bottom. Alternatively, maybe there are floorpans
that I can order and have my mechanic install them?

Anyway, for now, just take a look at the photos:
