Island hood with pendant lighting- too much?
Comments (9)In a large kitchen, you can do pendants and an island hood, but you've got to avoid the "spaceship invasion from Mars" look of all the stuff dangling from the ceiling looking for a place to land. More than about 3 pendants (including the hood) in a single space starts to look busy, unless they are something like just an odd number above a distinct seating area like a adjacent but separate breakfast bar. For your size sub-continent, it could possibly work and not be too busy. However, the minimal approach is always the safest. You don't want too many focal points. Your eyes will bleed trying to take it all in. (Can you even reach to clean such an island?) If you aren't using a visual planning aid like some design software, then mock it up with cardboard boxes for the island and balloons hung from above to mimic the size of your island hood and any pendants you might be considering. A combination of recessed spots and floods can make sure your island is well lit without pendants if the addition of a pendant or two is too overwhelming. Get your lighting designer involved. If you don't have one, go to any relatively expensive lighting store in town and ask for their most experienced staff designer and buy at least a couple of lights from them to justify the time they spend with you even if the lights aren't for your kitchen area....See MorePendant lighting in front of small kitchen window??
Comments (3)Hhmmm...I've seen lots of pendants about 8" wide. What style are you going for? Modern? Traditional? Country? Have you looked at Restoration Hardware, Ballard Designs, Schoolhouse or Pottery Barn? How about some of the big websites that carry many brands? I think lampsplus dot com has a sort feature where you can narrow down the size yup want. Or maybe it was Lightology dot com. Try googling " small pendant" and see what turns up. I think two pendants in that space sounds like too much....See More1 Pendant Light or 3 Pendant Lights from Ceiling
Comments (18)For the uplight, you could go a few routes, especially with respect to dimming functionality. And some fixtures don't support dimming, so you need to figure that out. To that end, I suggest you think through the use cases. For example, the use case that I think I'd appreciate most is late evening, after you've retired to another room of the house, at which time a mellow indirect glow from the skylight cutout would be particularly pleasant. You might also want the more light from this source on occasion, in which case you'd want brighter lights on a dimmer. That being said, here's some options. I'm thinking two, centered on the skylights, mounted near the bottom rim of the cutout (just above the beam probably). Regarding the pendant, I know that selecting pendants is hard enough without more to think about, but one downside of a single pendant vs multiple pendants is thhat single sources create worse shadows. And the clear glass pendants above exacerbate this harsh shadow problem by being point sources, whereas the Fillsta, for example, mitigates this problem because it's effectively a uniform 31" sphere of light. This large diffuser also makes it possible to use a brighter source. For example, you could put a 300W equivalent CFL in the Fillsta, but such a bright light would be unacceptably harsh in a point source like the clear glass pendants above....See MoreAre these Pendant lights too big?
Comments (15)Pakmount, I get it, these pendants will be a style statement that affects your whole kitchen. That said, I can’t recommend a precise fixture since I can’t tell what style your house is, how far apart the fixtures have been roughed in, and the other metal finish selections in your new kitchen. I will say from my own kitchen; steer away from clear glass and open bulb fixtures. They are a nightmare to keep clean. I will clean mine (take down the globes, wash them in hot soapy water, dry them, put them back up) and they only stay pretty for about 1 week. Cooking oils + dust + clear glass = no fun. Also, the more pendants you have, the simpler they should be. Try to think if it as an art installation that will provide the surface of your island with some needed task lighting. If you have proper coverage with can lights around the room, these pendants don’t need to shine light all around the room.
