Are your shelves wire? That makes it more difficult, but I would look at any ind of organization and storage stuff to find what fits. We started with some cabinet/pantry storage bins we already had. Look at Amazon and just search organization or storage and freezer and get an idea of what kind of options are out there (bins, baskets, divided bins, under shelf drawers, stackable containers, shelf dividers, inexpensive metal book ends....). I would use those ideas and look to see what you might have that will repurpose, then look to fill in.

My father built extra freestanding shelves out of plywood. :) If your freezer works with air circulation and an evaporator, rather than being a manual defrost deep freeze, I wouldn't suggest anything solid.

You could build bins to perfect size using wood (or artists' stretcher bars if you want prefinished) and nylon mesh screen or other grid material.

You could also search online or on Amazon for "wire" grid organizer baskets.

I used plastic milk crates in mine and separated the beef from the pork, chicken, etc. Worked perfectly plus you can pull out the crate to select what you want.

Thanks. Yes, the shelves are wire, and this is a manually-defrosted model. Thanks for all the suggestions! (I just took possession of half a local pig last week, and there SHOULD be room for other things, too.)

We had one like that and just went to the Container Store and got containers the size we wanted. They stacked easy and we could label them etc for easy storage searches.

I downsized to an 18' upright freezer when we bought this house, thinking I could get by with smaller and energy efficient. It's barely big enough, even with a roomy freezer area in my French door refer, and a little space in the garage refrigerator.

I ordered three of the above baskets and they just came FedEx this week. I put pork products (bacon, pieces of ham I'd frozen for soups, couple of packages of pork steaks) in one basket, cheeses and odds and ends of other things in another, and single serving sized things along with a few items that should be used soonest in the third. I think they are going to work out well.

One thing I'm finding with beginning to freeze much vacuum packed these days, those vacuum sealed packages are slippery - and the excess ends make it hard to stack, keep things neat. I bought freezer butchers paper and may start wrapping some things in paper. Back when we used to have half a beef, share half a pork with a friend, all was wrapped in paper and I didn't really see a difference in frozen shelf life when well wrapped. And I've had enough practice I do know how to wrap well. Tidier ;0)

Editing to add - I am not that Ebay seller ;0) Only a consumer who needed a tidier freezer and spent an hour browsing Amazon, Target, others last week before ordering on Ebay. I promise.

Freezer paper works well if it's tight and you have flat surfaces, like with steaks, but when you have an evaporator unit, rather than a manual defrost, you can really see the difference. Vacuum sealed in plastic is far superior in that case.

Right. And I'm too old school to ever want a self defrosting freezer.

OT - but this is a small community and we have but two places that stock appliances. Rather than go out of town like I did for my kitchen, laundry, I thought for something simple like a freezer I could stay local. There were no manual defrost freezers and one needed to be ordered in. The 'appliance' clerk at our Sears didn't know there was such a thing as a manual defrost freezer and couldn't understand why I insisted on that feature ;0)

LOL! Oh, my! It sounds like there aren't a lot of hunters in your area. :) If there were, the clerk would at least only be agog if you wanted an upright manual rather than a chest. :)

I learned the difference when I brought some bourekes (like spanakopita) in to the kitchen freezer, then didn't use them right away. They last forever in freezer paper in the manual defrost, but started losing quality in the very fancy, usually good for most things, evaporator freezer inside. :)
