Général Schablikine was a rose largely grown for cut flowers in the Riviera, and also largely cultivated in the gardens for its winter flowering: that's why it's so (relatively) commonly seen here. As I was saying about Albéric Barbier in another thread, the Général root easily from cuttings and don't care to be neglect.It's a rose rather similar -both in colour and shape of the bush- to 'Archiduc Joseph'/USA'Monsieur Tillier', but the bush is even denser and hardier. Those specimens are really "special", 'cause they are gigantic plants. But the garden at Ninfa has a very rich soil and abundant water. I think I will post some pictures of this magic place, a garden made of roses, flowering trees and medieval ruins of an abandoned town, all round a blue-green, transparent river. I've written two years ago an article about this garden, maybe someone can help me with the translation (... Melissaaaaa! ;o) ) Ingrid, I think the Page's Garden you say isn't in Italy, but in France, near Cap Ferrat: Russell planted here several 'Général Schablikine' under the canopy of ancient olive trees, and then carpeting the soil with blue agapanthus... not too bad, not too bad.... :o))) Ciao! Comments (19)This looked so festive. I have always wanted to "do" pretty table, but year after year we eat off of disposables due to the number of us and the work. I have a set of china (not expensive) but one that my parents bought me in a whole set when I got married 36 years ago. I had registered a nice set of pottery at that time because it was more practical. We enjoyed it for many years. Since so many of my friends had registered both china and pottery, my Mom wanted me to have some. My set came from Montgomery Wards and is a service for 12. I think I have used it once. I vow to use it this next year some. I have been on a binge since Christmas to buy some pretty tablecloths and napkins. I have found some awesome deals and will try my hand at some tables. (But, I am not really creative.) I just love looking at all the tablescapes here, I have been so envious of all the pretty dishes and the variety of them. I don't have a clue of where I would store more. But, tonight it hit me that I could pick up only two or maybe some in sets of four and have a variety. It is just DH and me at home, except that DD (adult) is living with us at the moment. Betty, I was in CVS today and saw those blue snowman, snowflake dishes. They are adorable. I may just have to go and pick up a few tomorrow. Also, if you have a Kroger in your area, check them out. Ours has glassware that is clear and has blue and white snowflakes. I saw them a couple of days ago and they had a lot and they were cheap. However, I don't have anything blue. Now, I realize that I could pick up a nice set of dishes between there and CVS. Thanks for the inspiration. I also have a set of holiday dishes I got last year at the Salvation Army TS and some more at a church TS. They are both white and feature a Christmas tree in the center. They don't match, but do coordinate. I didn't even unpack them this year, but I will do so next year. I know have tablecloths and napkins for them. Comments (5)This looks like a really nice kitchen. You have enough room to allow all your zones to be separated nicely. I'm jealous! I would consider a prep sink on the corner of the island nearest the fridge, as it's nearly 12 ft between fridge and cleanup sink. It would definitely help during prepping meals. You also say you like to bake. You could keep all your baking materials by the MW/walloven and prep sink there would serve you very well. A prep sink there would also be a great place for drink dumpage before refilling from the fridge - much handier to the LR than the cleanup sink is. It looks like your MW/wall oven stack is breaking up that counter into two small chunks. I would consider scooting it all the way to the end, or pushing it right next to the fridge. You do have a lot of counterspace elsewhere though, so you may wish to ignore this. It looks like you do not plan seating at the island, correct? Your aisles should be 42" for one cook or 48" for multiple cooks, and more if you plan seating. By my math, on the 16' wide section, you can have two 46.5 aisles between sink-island-Fridge. That is workable if there is no seating. This also assumes that your fridge is truly counter-depth (25" deep) as you show. Standard fridges are around 36" deep including doors - you can see how that will jut into the aisle. I am not sure what the aisle is between range and island but it looks comparable. Finally, make sure you have at least some counter space on both sides of the laundry room sink. My former kitchen sink was right up against the wall and it was the biggest PITA. Comments (15)This is exactly what I think it is--serpentine. Yes, they do call it a granite--again, artistic license as I've learned about this industry now. So, it's not a soapstone OR a granite but they call it a "green soapstone granite". I purposely didn't pick marble (even though I LOVE it) because I knew how messy my two boys and I are, and thought we would ruin it in no time (also because I am going with a bit more rustic of a look and can't use white marble). It is gorgeous. However, I a tempted to just to the verde tunas granite (polished) which might be a nice contrast to my matte slate floor and matte stone wall. Also, I know exactly what I am getting. I am afraid with the serpentine I would stain it or etch it if it's like a marble. I have hounded the granite people (IMC-a HUGE granite yard)about this and they also have it in a leathered finish and then this honed finish. Verde Tunas isn't my dream granite or anything but it's calm enough (reads like a solid color and won't compete with what I've got going on) that it might "go the best". Everybody says how gorgeous this is, yet no one has picked it for their kitchen. That being said, I am wondering if there are a lot of people who do actually have this "green soapstone" granite that think they have soapstone (though you couldn't oil it)???...See MoreJennifer
