just want to be done, kids sick, novelty worn off
Comments (6)Hang in there KP. We had a strange bout of pneumonia that went through our neighborhood - - kids and adults - - a few months ago. I caught it from DS and was down and out for almost three weeks. I've never had it before that, but when I tell you there were days that making a cup of tea was the most I could manage to do I'm not exaggerating. So please try to take care of yourself and minimize what has to be done for now to save your strength. Can you switch to take out (with the exception of chicken soup, of course) and paper plates for a few days while you nurse the kids back to health? And don't forget to take lots of vitamin C!...See MoreKitchen Reno, need major advice on how to modernize this kitchen
Comments (9)I just bought and will be moving in at the end of the month and was hoping to move from warm beige/brown tones to more modern cool white/grey tones. I had a feeling you just bought the house : ) . Now that you've confirmed that, here's my advice. And I'm giving you the advice as someone who has moved into new-to-me houses several times -- not as the wife of a builder who could make a lot of money with a project like yours lol. Don't do anything now. Not even hardware. You have a nice, virtually new kitchen. It may not be entirely to your taste, but that's fine. What you need to do know is live in, and use, the kitchen for at least a year. Cook, for yourself, your family, your friends. Have people over. Enjoy your new home. See how the space functions first. You may well decide to make other changes, so rather than spending money now on some cosmetic things, see what you think after a year, which will give you a full chance to see how the kitchen and adjoining areas work for you. The problem with moving away from warm beige/brown tones is that, as Sina mentioned above, your kitchen flooring is warm beige/brown tones. So is the dining room flooring adjacent to the kitchen, the living room which is open to the dining room has warm beige/brown tones, and the staircase in the living room. And then in your original post you mention brass, which is definitely a warm tone. Whatever changes you make in the kitchen are going to affect the rest of the main floor, much like the book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" lol. So live in the house, enjoy it, and don't make decisions at least until the new year : ) . And congratulations on your new house!...See MoreHELP! Comments (22)The angled corner is noticeable in the plan view., but not so much in the elevation view rendering. However in real life, I think the angled corner will be unattractive and I would not do it. During our kitchen remodel, we cut down the peninsula bar to counter height, but could not move walls or cabinet footprint. At one point of the peninsula, the cabinet and countertop edge are 32” and 31” respectively from one point on a dividing wall at the passage lane from the dining area to the kitchen. It is just one point on the end of the wall and has never been an eyesore or issue. It is a trade off. The larger island is better than the smaller island for scale and your desired use. The island is prettier than the peninsula, if you can fit it. The wall corner is the exterior wall so it can’t be moved or torn down. So after reconsidering the pros and cons, I think the “narrower than ideal“ passage opening, at one point on the wall corner, will not be a big deal for you. The house plans show a window in the area where I thought a pantry should go, so I see that is not an option. What you may want to reconsider is if you can swap the fridge and stove wall. Moving the range hood to the exterior wall would facilitate venting, unless you already have a venting system in your wall I the location as shown....See MoreKitchen Reno: how to narrow down choices and commit?
Comments (4)No kitchen designer here, we did a full home remodel with no designer. It took some time for me to commit with the kitchen stuff, I also knew I wanted white shaker but after having it in 2 prior kitchens I was open to other looks too. I ended up with navy blue lowers and white uppers after seeing the navy in a showroom. Also opted for the kraftmaid sonata door at the last minute after seeing it in person in lowes. It's shaker with a little something extra. We also used a home reno app on the ipad to see different layouts and posted on here as well as instagram for advice. Once we had a layout we liked we got 8 different quotes, some online that came with a free layout/designer, big box stores, ikea, costco, etc. Our kitchen designer at lowes was fantastic....See Morem_gabriel
