Painted Cabinets vs. Stained?
Comments (23)I think that like most things in life, at the end of the day you should probably go with whatever your heart tells you is right for you. I've had both, and agree with pretty much everything everyone wrote here. White definitely shows more dirt....but with a nice, quality finish that dirt wipes right off. They do chip more (or, at least show it more) - but again, with a little bit of touch-up paint they look nearly good as new. Stained cabs seem to hold up better in my house - but again, that may be only because you can't see the wear nearly as much. I have dark stained cabs now, and I absolutely LOVE them. I paired them with a white granite, and every morning I still smile when I walk in that kitchen. But that whole end of the house has lots windows with exposure on 3 sides of the house....so the cabs are dark but the rest of the space is so light that they provide a nice balance. All in all, I think the best thing to do is weigh the pros and cons as they relate to your life and your house....See MoreStained vs. Painted Cabinets: I'm tired of thinking about this!
Comments (24)Since it is a new build, I would encourage you to solve your lighting problems with a good lighting design and not by lighter or darker finishes. It's amazing how many people feel that they can't have what they want in a complete kitchen renovation because of natural lighting conditions when they could just add more lighting and it's not a problem anymore. That said, stained finishes are definitely more durable and hold up better as well as being easier to touch up. i wonder if your take on the the painted finish is because it is sprayed rather than brushed. A sprayed finish with topcoat will not look or feel like a hand brushed finish and will definitely feel more "factory" and "perfect" and less "natural" especially to someone who is accustomed to a brushed finish (I don't mean a hacked brushed finish either, but a nice one done by someone who knows what they are doing). It is definitely a different look/feel but also a lot more expensive to do a nice brushed finish....See MoreCabinet finish ? Re: paint vs tinted varnish
Comments (6)Thanks for your responses. The cabinets that my DD is considering are Showplace, DuraSurpreme, and Fieldstone. The Fieldstone Is the one that states their finish is tinted varnish. They have 15 colors in their palette and will do custom odors too. Their tinted varnish on maple look just like paint. On oak you can see some of the grain showing through Showplace states that, "The versatile palette of Showplace painted finishes give the visual impression of a painted surface, These finishes are created by a multistep process that includes final topcoating with an oven-baked varnish for superior durability, in satin or matte sheen. Fourteen standard paint colors are offered." Dura Supreme's website states that they use "full coverage enamel paints that are smooth and durable, with rich, saturated color. They do mention using catalyzed varnish in regards to their stained cabinets. Greendesigns is Dura Supreme considered a low end cabinet? Deedles, I hope you are not in the area of our state that got clobbered with snow. I meant to comment on one of your threads about the progress in your project. It's looking great. Rebecca, glad to hear that you also were told that the colored stain, AKA tinted varnish is more durable. Time to get some pricing and decide on which cabinets to use....See MorePaint Job on Custom Kitchen Cabinets vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets?
Comments (6)We used cliqstudios cabinets in 3 projects in our last house. 2 were stained wood, 1 was the painted wood (linen). The painted cabinets withstood 2 children coloring on them with non washable crayons, colored pencil, 3 cats who loved to rub their faces on the corners and a very VERY busy work area. After pricing the cliqstudios cabinets, the same kitchen in IKEA, and KountryWood Products (available through a local dealer), we've decided to go with cliqstudios again. The prices were exactly the same, IKEA doesn't come with plywood sides, they were only available as an upgrade on the KWP's and they come standard on the cliqstudios cabinets. Plus, I don't have to build the cliqstudios cabinets. As for the finished - my parents went with a VERY high end custom cabinetry company (apologies, I don't remember the name) - white painted inset shaker style - the finish on their cabinets started looking like crap within 5 years. Places where the cabinet finish has chipped, or flaked off, discoloration, etc....See Moredonnatrus
