Pea gravel side yard

Hi - I have a question on pea gravel. We have a 300 square foot side yard that turns into a slop pit during the rainy season. In that area, there is a layer of clay on top of the soil that is probably an inch thick and it sticks to everything once it gets wet. The area doesn't get a lot of foot traffic, but it is where we stack wood, so we do need access to it. This weekend I laid down a layer of pea gravel over the soil. It seems like it will give us a surface to walk on while still allowing for drainage. It is a little loose, should i compact it with a plate compactor? Will this effect the drainage? Thanks for the help.
