Rounding corners on a quilt
I'm contemplating the design of one of my next quilts. It's going to be some variation on the "quartered stripes" pattern. I want to use it as a bedspread, but I hate the corners that hang on the floor. I want to round them some way. In my mind, it's going to look "chopped off" on the corners any way I can think of doing it. Is there any way to do it that will look like it belongs like that?

Comments (15)The star sashing is really quite simple, though a bit fussy, LOL. In this case I used 1.25" strips and stitched 3 together, which gives a 2.75" sashing strip. I cut the strips to the block size, and then added (2) 1 5/8" squares to the ends, stitching diagonally. Trim and press. Use a 2.75" square as the cornerstone with the sashing. Note that some sashing strips have 4 squares (2 on each end), while others have just one end with the squares. One can also use just a solid 2.75" strip of fabric for the sashing, rather than a pieced strip. These measurement came from the Singer Sewing Reference Library "Quilt Projects by Machine". Comments (8)Circuspeanut - how funny that I recently saved your and Francy's sink pictures and here you are! What's interesting is that to my eye, yours looks less rounded in the back (very slight radius?) and of course quite rounded in the front. It's a beautiful sink/countertop/kitchen! And I love that yours and mine are both metals so I made a point to hunt yours down. ;) Thanks for responding. Cupcake - okay - I didn't realize NOT rounding the back corners is so rare! Probably also because my sink will be sitting pretty much flush, so it makes more sense not to round them in the front. I had the SAME THOUGHT about the label, but when I compared both ways, I found myself visually drawn to the diamond shape and little splash of color that the label offered. Interesting cause i struggled w/ it for the same reason! I tend to hate labels and feel the company should be paying me for the advertising. Comments (4)After putting in the angled trim on round corners like your first pic and deciding that it didn’t look good, I replaced the corners with prefab round ones. Using a multitool the baseboard edges could be squared off without removing trim and it looks better. Installing baseboard like you would on square corners doesn't look as good IMHO but you may like it and it is easier to install....See Moretoolgranny

7 years agoThanks for your help. I think I'll just make it smaller so it doesn't drag the floor. I saw the same pattern that was sashed and it looked great. I think I might do it that way, but it is even more geometric, so the rounded corner will probably look wonky.

7 years agoIf you could make the size work, it would be great. I guess you could always measure carefully and use your square up ruler if you needed the blocks to be a bit smaller.
The more I look at this pattern, the more I question using this fabric for this design. I love the fabric. I'm really stuck on the blue and yellow lately. I saw this on a MSQ video and went back for more of this fabric.
Would it be too repetitive to turn all the squares in instead of alternating? Of course, you can see what it looks like after you cut it, but before you sew it. What if you sashed it?
