New Year's Dallas camping and birding trip
Comments (8)I live in a rural area near the Ellisville Harbor State Park, and a road runs right by the salt marsh. At low tide the mudbanks butt up to the road and a few years ago I took this photo. At the time I knew almost nothing about ducks, and noticed the strange looking mallards in the mud. My philosophy is always shoot first and ask questions later, so I shot and went home to check the references. I didn't even know Green-winged Teal existed. At that distance my Canon Powershot S5IS with a 12X zoom can handle it, although I don't get that nice feather detail. Some day I'll get better equipment, but not right now. Comments (11)Jen, You know me, it is never too cold to camp, matter of fact on my way in about 2 1/2 hr for the weekend. It gets kind of tricky this time of yr with no running water in the campground though. We have to bring all water in jugs that we use. The REAL thing that bothers is me is no use of bathroom facilities, there is nothing like a restroom when you need one. Only 2 more months until the water is turned on. The smell of food cooking over the fire is awesome and so relaxing. Eal51----kind of funny you mention boyscouts, my hubby was a leader for years with my 3 boys and camped all yr. too. The stories I would hear about camping in igloos they made in the snow in the winter and waking up with icles on their faces etc it was so funny. I guess thats why we camp all yr, it is nothing compared to all those yrs. he went through. He says he is living the life now, he doesn't have to sleep in a tent in the cold any longer. We sleep in our tent when it is nice out though. Lynda...See Moresimple receipes for camping trip
Comments (36)I wish I'd seen this thread before posting mine! Yes, you can use a pressure cooker on the propane stove. I had a pressure cooker in my RV (and plan to put it in the camping equipment for this summer's trip). I have also used it on the white-gas stove (older Coleman model), when we were renovating the kitchen at home. We looked at those 12-volt refrigerators. My husband was annoyed that he got rid of his after leaving the trucking industry. Well, how could we know! Thanks for the tips on the newer ones. As far as camping reservations go: from experience, the national park campgrounds fill fast. Many of them are on the reservation system, and others (like in Arches) will require you to start trolling through the CG at daybreak, looking for departing campers. Our trip is about the same length as yours, though we are staying in motels and with friends and family instead of tent-camping. From experience with long trip tent camping, though, you'll want to get a motel room or find a truck stop with reasonably priced showers (bring shower shoes) every 3-4 days. Your trip sounds like a lot of fun -- we're heading from CA to ME via Orlando, FL, and back through MO (daughter, son-IL and new granddaughter live there). So we're going opposite of you, grin. I've placed a link to a great resource for road-trip planners. It's one of my favorite Internet sites. Comments (28)Thanks Funky. Dinner was excellent, if I do say so myself. My fruit source had delicious cantaloupe (cut, so I could taste it). So I did cantaloupe and proscuitto. I also scored fresh made whole milk ricotta, so I did that instead of pea puree. When we were in Italy this one hotel buffet had fresh ricotta, italian bread, cantaloupe and salami on the buffet every morning and I loved the combo, so the Crostini with Ricotta and Honey with the wrapped melon was an homage to that. I also served my gazpacho shooters and I made a new Sangria with Rum ... yum! I grilled a butterflied leg of Marinated Lamb and served it with pita pockets that I browned and warmed in a little butter first (kept extras in the warming drawer). I served it with homemade Tzatziki, feta, baby lettuces, and Red Onion Marmalade. I made couscous with oil and vinegar, cinnamon, turmeric, salt and pepper, with finely diced cuke and red pepper, raisins, toasted almonds and parsley. Then for dessert, once again i did the Lemon Pistachio Ice Cream Sandwiches. Was it CindyMac who first posted those? They are a big hit every time, and so easy! A BIG thank you to whoever posted them! We had such a nice night and our guests had seconds on everything and really enjoyed it. DH and I spent the day cooking so it was fun. They brought a perfect hostess gifts, two books ... one of them a cookbook she authored. Oly, It turned out that we took the risk of cooking it while they were here and we were having appetizers. I usually like everything done ahead of time but I wanted it to marinate more. But, I have leftovers so I will def try your method! We like our meat rare so reheating can be tricky. Thank you for that tip! Linelle, oh my, removing the skins? Can you blanche them to make it easier. Sounds like a PITA, pun intended. ps here was my DR table...See More- 9 years ago
