peach tree problem

I have a 2 year old peach tree that my daughter bought for me. It has not done well. There is a 2nd branch coming out of the soil next to the main trunk. This spring leaves appeared on the 2nd branch, but not from any branches coming from the main trunk.
Then last week I noticed the leaves looked like they had been eaten or ripped. The following day all the leaves were gone. The peach tree is only about one metre high.
I cant decide what is the best way to treat my peach tree. Can anyone help?

Not an expert, but if your tree is grafted, any branches coming out of the ground should be cut off as these will not produce the same fruit as what your peach tree is. They will also take over the main graft. Hopefully the reason the main trunk has no leaves is because it's going dormant.

Thank you for your reply. I had a feeling the 2nd branch coming out of the ground shouldn't be therte but was reluctant to cut it off before getting advice. The tree shouldnt be dormant as it is spring.

Make sure you are spraying an anti-fungal agent on your peach tree each spring. They are prone to several diseases that can wipe out and kill the tree. I had an 18-20 ft tall flat peach tree that died due to this.

You can prune the heck out of it and give it a good dose of N fertilizer. Peaches up here are really iffy. I'm not sure where you are, but canker is horrible on some trees (freeze damage). I took out 4 peach trees this spring because they looked so bad. Just grow them as annuals like i do. Plant a few pits every year and you'll have plenty of "spares" to put in :) They fruit on their 3rd year. Spray in early spring for curl. I sprayed in Nov and i still had some, but not much, i should have had another spray in there.

That damage looks a lot like my peach tree. I'm still a novice at identifying diseases, but I think it's a bacterial leaf spot. I've talked to a local nurseryman and he thinks the spots won't harm the tree too much this year, and there isn't any way to treat it now. I'll need to spray a copper fungicide (Kocide 3000 seems highly recommended) in the spring, before any leaves emerge. It might help, though most people recommend planting resistant varieties. I'm in WI, so it was important that I planted a hardy tree, so I went for a McKay peach. It came from the nursery with a canker (which I pruned out immediately), and I'm guessing that is where my bacterial leaf spot came from. The tree is perfect. It could use fertilizer once a month but nothing else appears wrong with the tree. One won't ordinarily expect or want fruit on a tree that small. It should fruit next yr. Leave no more than 12 fruit on a tree that size.

As long as the grafted portion is still alive I wouldn't worry overmuch. I'd trim anything under the graft and give the tree time. I've always been told that peach trees have super growth in spring-summer but my limited experience in spring planting has been that they were pretty slow to establish the first year.

I hope it is still aliv e. I trimmeed off the 2nd branch coming out.
