Refinish 60s dresser

So recently I got into getting old furniture to refinish (by someone else). I got this old 60s Drexel credenza that I want to use as a Media Console. I'm debating on the stain/paint color. I know painting furniture is really in these days, but I am wondering that is a fad that is going to pass. I really want the furniture to last. Since it lasted 50 years, I would think my kids can inherit them and keep them too for another 50 years. Would a stain top and navy/gray bottom be modern enough for future generation? I'm avoiding light colors because I know my kids will draw on them. Or should I stick with staining if I want it to last?
