What's going on with your water?
Comments (65)Hiya fruitnut! That picture was taken June 16th, about 2 weeks since our last significant rain. These new corn hybrids are incredible, they have withstood and even set ears in such dismal conditions. It's bad out there though. They have tested the genetic drought tolerance of the new corn hybrids, and we have learned that while the corn is now drought tolerant, it is not drought proof, there still needs to be SOME rain fall for things to grow. This is that same field of green corn from above, taken yesterday: The corn is "firing", dying from the ground up. Even if we got decent rains for the rest of the growing season, the corn cannot come back from it's current condition, it will wither where it stands. My pastures are bone dry While those pictures show decent ears along the outside rows, the outside rows are the only thing cool enough to set and fill ears. Once you go into the field, most plants aborted their ears or kernels... It is worth noting that I have some of the best soils in the country under me, deep black prairie that have productivity indices at the top of the chart. The soils don't get any better than Ipava and Muscatine silt loams. Soils that are not prairie but upland timber have a much lower organic matter content, and a lower moisture capacity, and corn grown on more marginal farms with upland timber soils look like this: That photo was taken on June 15th... near the same time as my pic way above....See MoreSweet Peas and a Pink Ladder
Comments (33)Hi FlowerLady! and thank you again for your kind and encouraging words. Sometimes we are so busy doing what we do we lose sight of it all! That lovely blue-flowering shrub is Ceanothus Impressus 'Victoria' ("California Lilac") - there are many other varieties and I chose this one for the colour, growth habit and because there's lots of it around here so I know it will thrive. When I mapped out a landscaping design for the front part of our lot which began as 1/2 acre mess of brambles, mint, horrible landfill and rock - I needed a fast-growing evergreen screen for what is now a parking area that can take three vehicles. In three years it grew to 10' tall; it's now 12' tall. In midsummer it is literally covered in those gorgeous blue blossoms (in fact another name for it is 'blueblossom'). Sitting in the rose garden on a warm summer afternoon you can hear the background bzzzzzzzzzz of countless bees as they do their work on those lovely blooms (much too busy to be bothered with anything or anyone else). We love it. It's taken quite a beating this winter with the snow (unusual for this part of Canada where we get more rain than anything else) but it's quite resilient. I would imagine it would do alright in Florida? One of the plus factors is that it originated as a desert plant and is drought resistant; we don't water it at all even during the hottest summers. The shiny leaves retain water naturally and aside from tidying it up a little with my pruning shears it is maintenance-free. Here's some photos for you and a link to read more about it: and this is a close-up of the beautiful blooms (can you see the bee?)...See MoreWANTED: TerriPacNW Nailed It!
Comments (27)Nancy, I make soy candles. It's a fun hobby. I have a few friends that "help pay" for my supplies. LOL In fact today I'm trying to decide what scents to make for the house, and I need to make a travel tin for my mom, as she's going on the road (she's a traveling software consultant) the first of March and will be living out of a hotel room for weeks on end. That flexible cutting board is nifty. I need to go back to the store and get one for myself....See MoreRequest for help with towel colors (photos)
Comments (21)leesa, the Durango limestone is amazing. I put many paint samples next to it, taupes/beiges/greens, and every single color seemed to pick up a tone in the tile. It goes with everything. But the detail tile does not go with much. elizabeth, I am now leaning toward white, with a nice green plant on the toilet tank (nowhere else to put it). I went to RH yesterday, intending to make a towel decision before the sale ended. They have so many beautiful colors! In person, I liked the blush and new celery. The salesperson told me that I could buy something at the sale price and then exchange it for another oclor later. I was agonizing, and thought about buying half of the towels I wanted in blush and half in celery, then later exchanging half of them for the other color, or exchanging all of them for white. I left the store before doing this, because I had to help my husband with clothes shopping. By the time we were finished with that, I was too tired to go back to RH, so I decided to do it online later. By the time I went online, I'd decided to go with white, but then I was discouraged by the shipping charges ($21!), and I thought I would leave the towel decision for now. I will wait until the room is finished, then maybe buy several hand towels in different colors, try them, and make a decision. I am realy sick of this renovation, and at the moment I hate everything I spent so long choosing! I am probably going to change the paint color based on a suggestion from someone in the bath forum. I have completely run out of steam. It seems to be going on forever, I think they started on July 5 and have been here just about every weekday since....See Moreelgable21
