Comments (129)Wow, thank you tanders and kitchenredo08 for being interested in how it turned out. I PROMISE to put up some pictures within a week. This project has had a lot of ups and downs. First, it took about three weeks for the material to arrive. When it came, I was thrilled; it was exactly what I hoped for. Then came the really fun part: installation. I was talked into the idea that we could do this ourselves. Hmmmm, not sure how to characterize that decision since this post could potentially be read by the other party to the decision ;-). Anyway, let's suffice it to say that stone tile, especially a split face is not for the novice installer. But we got it installed with just a few snafus. Then it was time for grout. We started using the pastry bag method, but abandoned it when my hand began to cramp. Switched to a float. BIG mistake. Grout EVERYWHERE in ALL of the nooks and crannies. Three weeks later and we're still chipping out grout. But we're getting close. Close enough where I'm loving it again. So anyway, it's been an adventure. My advice to anyone who wants to do stone; hire a professional. Again, I PROMISE some pictures very soon. I'm too embarassed to post my kitchen right now with chisels and nano scrub and sponges everywhere. Karen...See MoreAlmost Finished Kitchen - Pics - Need Backsplash help
Comments (16)Hi all - I started a new thread with a new option that I found. Maybe I should have kept it to one thread...sorry about that... @jjdcl - I did a board too of the white subways from HD. Have not grouted them yet as I was still debating the subways, wanted to wait until I was more committed. will post a pic of that actually @hosenemesis - oh no, you see the seam too? I might put my KA mixer over there to cover it up a bit. One of my contractors is coming by today (he used to install countertops before this gig and will get his professional opinion on the job) before saying anything again to the fabricator. My lesson learned from this is no matter what the granite slabyard tells you or your KD tells you about needing a seam, I am definitely going to wait to finish my kitchen design in the future & discuss with the fabricator to avoid a seam if at all possible. The installer said usually they cut things off at about 110-114 and any longer needs a seam. @catlover5 - I posed another thread with a new idea. will also post the white subway board I made next to the BA @flyingkite - your Azul looks very nice and the tile contrast is much more of what I think I want next to the BA granite...See Morefinished kitchen pics -and i need a backsplash
Comments (68)I can vouch that Kate's kitchen (along with the entire house!) is even more gorgeous in person than it is in the pictures! Her kitchen is my favorite by far (including my own, which I love dearly). And that bathroom....there are no words for how stunning it is. The tile she chose is absolutely perfect for her countertops and the feel of the room and it's going to be a design home run. It is, as bee said, an excellent backup singer. I had never seen that sparkly grout before and it is fascinating. I shouldn't say sparkly because it sounds too My Little Pony and it's not like that at all; it's a hint of sparkle, just enough to intrigue the eye. Anyway, we had a great time; Kate's just as much fun IRL as she is here online. I am looking forward to a return trip to see it all finished!...See MoreNeed backsplash resources and ideas
Comments (9)You're right - you're not local! Ah well... I've been doing some more googling and searching, and found some absolutely BEAUTIFUL things I quite like on the Monterey Ceramic Tile site - I'm not going for a fully "reproduction" kitchen, but I do have slightly Mission style cabinets in a 1928 bungalow, and thus am trying to incorporate period elements if only as occasional accents. I found the site by googling "Arts & Crafts tile" and, while those are certainly interesting, the ones that really struck my eye (and are similar to some I saw yesterday) are the Restoration ones - even just doing a top border or accent tiles in that sort of style might be just the kind of interest I need to dress things up a little without actually competing with my quartz counter. Any comments, thoughts or suggestions on where to find and how to use those kinds of pieces? I will post pictures of my (very small) space once they're a little further on with hanging cabinets and taking down the wall between kitchen and diner, but in the meantime, any comments you (or anybody else) has are more than welcome! Btw, since you asked, here's my cabinet wood (KM's nat maple), counter (Cambria) and floor (not even Craigslist as the other two elements, but a free hand-me-down from somebody - yes, our kitchen is so small that we can use somebody else's "overage"... ;). Obviously, it's all rather monochrome - that's good (because the space is small and it will open it out) but if a backsplash can incorporate a bit of colour in a non-obtrusive way, that's definitely not a bad thing (and may even lead me to a decision on wall paint!). Also, since other people seem to be "backsplash-seeking" as well: I found the thread linked below while searching this morning, and bumped it in the image gallery (note to self: I didn't even know there WAS an image gallery until this! Very cool :) Here is a link that might be useful: backsplash thread in image gallery...See Morejvicktwin
