B&D cordless drill??

Have an older one that is apparently "dead". Has sat out on shelf in garage for who know how long, plugged into charger... nothing happening. I know it didn't cost much when I bought it, so have been on look-out for a replacement. Yesterday, bought one at a yard sale... 2 snap in batteries. Seller said one battery didn't work and other needed to charge first. I didn't spend much money for it, but after batteries (in charger) sat all night... NADA!?! Seems just ONE new battery will cost at least three times what I paid for the thing.

What would you do? Just say Oh, well and donate "as is"? If I took batteries to place like L's or HD, would they be able to tell me if either was salvageable? Maybe buy a battery, check to see if drill itself works... return battery if it doesn't?

I haven't tried it, but there are several videos, on youtube, saying you can revive your dead batteries, by re plugging your charger, several times, into the socket. revive old batteries. It's worth a try.

I was shocked to learn those are disposable drills. It's cheaper to buy a new one. I had considered it an investment when I bought a Ryobi drill - maybe $60? I forget. I will be getting an electric one next time.

I have only used a B&D cordless weedwacker. I personally will never buy another cordless lawn/garden tool. It just did not have sufficient power to get the job done and was always needing to be recharged (I think it had NiCd batteries). Luckily, I only have to use my electric hedge trimmer about once a year so don't mind the cord.

Cordless drills certainly can't deliver the power that a 20 amp outlet can. If you need that sort of power you'll have to stay attached to the wall. But the point of a cordless drill is not being attached to the wall. I realize that this thread started a couple of years ago, but battery technology is rapidly changing. Many people think they've learned certain 'truths' about batteries (memory, wearing out, temperature range, etc.), that actually only apply to certain types of battery designs. Batteries could last forever. We don't have any that do yet, but the newer lithium-ion batteries last significantly longer than the batteries of just a few years ago. The new Makita LXT 18v batteries will go through 2.5 times more cycles than a Ni-Cad batteries. In another 5 years it's hard to tell what we'll see. But there are some reviews of what's currently out there at the site in the link.

There is a line of power hand tools designed for women---the tools are even a shade of pink, as I recall. It seems those are a decent line of tools---smaller and lighter than the usual line up of supermacho tools. You could probably Google womens tools and find them. Panasonic makes a cordless drill that is lighter than most---their 12v models have small diameter handles. Basically a 12v tool will be the lower power limit for what you need. 18v tools will almost certainly be too big/heavy. I have several cordless drills---all 14.4v models. They are lighter than the higher voltage models and have more power than the 12v. models. But, I doubt you would find using that size pleasant.

Check on Amazon for replacement batteries. Otherwise, I would go and buy a new cordless drill made by Kobalt. Their batteries are only $20 and they have a really good long life. My husband just got rid of all of his Ryobi cordless tools and he's wanting new ones made by Kobalt.

The charger seems to work... at least a red light comes on to indicate it is charging?? There's no different light to show charge complete. It's not like I use a drill on a remotely regular basis, so not a priority to remedy... yet. Got thinking... I think I have a CORDED drill out in the garage?!? For all I use one for, that's a major DUH moment!

My B & D charger light blinks red when charging and is solid red when battery is fully charged.

You can have the batteries rebuilt. I just had 4 rebuilt at Interstate Battery, one cost 33.00 and one cost 44.00 to have rebuilt. Surely there is someone in your area that does that also.
