Peony root planted late September. Growing already!?

This is my first time planting a peony root. I planted it about 2 weeks ago. It's sprouting above the ground. How do I make sure it will grow next spring? Should I cover it or let it grow? I live in Oklahoma. We got a bunch of rain last week. Expecting more. Temperatures are in the low 80's high 70s maybe 50s at the night . I just want to make sure it does well next spring !!

Unless it had three eyes or more do not expect any peony to "do well" next spring. It will take at least another year before it will start looking like most of the peonies you see in other gardens. There is nothing for anyone to do with this peony other than let it do what it wants to do. Some would suggest removing the spouts but the plant will do what it wants to. If you remove the sprouts it may force the root to form new buds rather than sending out feeder roots. FYI Most peonies bloom buds are formed in a three year cycle. The buds that will bloom were formed three years ago. It takes that long from erupting from the root to becoming mature enough to form a flower bud.

Having them wake up for a bit in the fall happens occasionally; it's happened before in my garden. Typically we have another cold snap within a few weeks and the growth dies back, have never had to cut anything and can't tell the difference between those that sprouted in the fall and those that didn't as far as spring growth goes. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

If it's in a map, then I'm wrong although my area is 2 hours south from Barrie. I wouldn't describe it as a debate. Zoning helps as a general gauge but it's the microclimates that we all have to watch out for. If you have a very exposed area - to winds, snow, heat, etc.. - then it could very well be possible that the zone in that specific spot can dip further below than the general average. Microclimates change with weather patterns. My recommendation has more to do with preparing for the unexpected. Hence my recommendation if in borderline 5 areas, think zone 4. Like I had said earlier, go ahead with the planting and mulch to provide better protection during winter. Snow adds to insulation and keeps the ground temps steady. So I normally pile it on during winter to keep my plants safe from teh freeze and thaws. Use the trench method to hold plants you don't have beds for yet. Or use a protected area like a cold frame for such plants -- (use can create a box out of bales of hay and top with an old window frame).

Itoh Peonies - growing from root pieces?

I'm finding that like herbaceous peonies, itoh peonies also seem to be growing from fragments, as long as there's are buds on it. They are kind of like a potato which would grow much easier with eyes, and the size of the attached tuber mass tends to determine the size of the plant. I have literally taken a herbaceous peony eye, placed it some seed starter soil, and it ended up growing into a small plant. I have no idea if eyeless fragments can develop eyes and flower, but I would suggest potting them up, keeping them watered, and hope that buds form and produce some small sprouts. It is very possible as I have seen eyeless pieces of herbaceous peonies produce sprouts. When you get your new itoh replacement, I would suggest planting it in full sun in an area where soil drains well, or perhaps create a raised mound over it since partially tuberous roots may be vulnerable to rotting with standing water.

You can put them out on warm days and bring them in on cold days and nights if you want. They will do better that way and take less hardening off since they have broken dormancy than if you try to grow them by a basement window. A wheelbarrow to easily move them into and out of the garage, or just take the plants out as you head out to work if the temperatures are above freezing. If it's any comfort, after my grandmother died, I divided and brought back a couple Festiva Maxima peony roots from plants that my grandfather had planted many years prior. This was mid-July, and they survived and grew just fine after a couple of days wrapped in damp paper towels. So I imagine that at least some of yours should survive.
