Comments (30)Rosefolly, hope you got a giggle out of those photos. I wish I would have taken a full set of photos of every thing I did around my parents place. But I never thought anything less than a dozer and dump truck would be needed and was embarrassed about the condition of their place. That feeling guilty you "let" your parents live like that and knowing that they would not allow me to do anything to clean it up. It took my dad turning 90 and a letter from the insurance company to get them to allow me to start cleaning it up. Even then Mom thought a fresh rope would "fix" the problem with the fence. I look back at that before photo every time I think that progress is too slow or hard work is not making a difference. It is good to have a reminder that you have come far on days you feel overwhelmed or like things are not going as planned. (Funny story-I had helped mom "fix" the roof on that shed with the blue tarp years before. But the tarp was covered in leaves that were wet and slowly sinking in the rotting roof. So I planned on pulling that tarp toward me to replace it. I was standing on the orchard ladder clearing the leaves while mom and my youngest son went to look for mandarines in the garden. They heard the loudest "Girl Scream" and both came running assuming I had fallen from the ladder. No I had come face to face with an unhappy opossum that had made a nest up there and was not happy to be evicted)...See MoreIdeas please for very hot concrete urns?
Comments (20)One question I have is whether the planters are painted and what color they are.. white is a reflective color and cooler than black or a dark color, so if they are dark, it would be a good idea to paint them white so to reflect a lot of the heat. The pot inside the pot is a good idea, and then put several one to two inch size rocks or golf balls in the bottom of the planter, under the pot, so the there's room for a little water for humidity and reserve. I'm surprised no one mentioned wave petunias..they're heat hardy if watered every day as planters in the heat need to be, and put on a great show. Another annual if you can get them, or plant from seed are annual dwarf phlox. They are about 10 inches to a foot tall and are the most cheerful, cottage flower I know. They're a little tricky to get going well, but once they're established, what a beautiful, charming show they put on...It really helps boost them to pinch off the seed balls which form after the flower clusters...but it's a joy to see how readily they flower afterwards. There is also a Twinkle dwarf variety which look like little stars. Try them for a sunny site. Sweet alyssum is also a nice one for a hot spot. How about Zinnias? They come in some interesting colors, shapes and forms....See MoreAsphalt vs. concrete for very long drive in N.Ohio, historic look
Comments (10)Asphalt gets tracked in on shoes as well as bare feet. I've had light color floors and an asphalt drive and fought the walk pattern stain with little success. It probably doesn't show on darker floors but it still has to be there. You could do the asphalt on the long approach then change to concrete or pavers for your entry areas. We're looking to purchase a house and that's one of the first changes we'll make if there is an asphalt drive - I won't have it near the house but if it's a long drive it's fine coming in from the road. FWIW, where I live now you would not be allowed to do either a concrete or asphalt drive in new construction or a replacement at all - revised code says it has to be a permeable surface....See MoreNew Concrete Coping Cracking and Other Issues - HELP!!
Comments (3)My patio is much more simple than yours, but the problems are similar. With mine, the edging and overall finish work was done very poorly, and I also have a few cracks after just two weeks! Fortunately for me, it was the last thing he did and I refused to pay him for the work. He's gone, but now I am left with a gorgeous pool surrounded by an ugly patio that looks like it was done 10 years ago! One piece of advice I will give you: Find out how long the cement truck was at the job site. I was told by a few masons that the concrete has about 90 minutes from the time the truck leaves the cement facility to the time it is poured. Any longer than that and it begins to set up. I called the cement company, gave them my address and who did the job, and they read the info off the "ticket" right to me. They even offered to fax me a copy! In my case, the truck was here for 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the facility was 1/2 hour away. Even if my PB tries to take me to court, this info alone would win my case. Maybe something similar happened to you and you can call the PB on it and have him redo it. Good luck!...See Moregreg_2015
