Do you guys do all the work yourselves or hire
Comments (78)Sherri-- The trick is that I got him hooked on roses. I just buy him a rose from time-to-time and I think that keeps him willing to help me. We counted his roses and he now has 19. I also use pot roast, homemade chili, and blackened chicken alfredo as persuasive devices. Then again, I would also recommend steak marinated in garlic, a touch of worcheshire sauce and brown sugar.... next to a sweet potato with honey butter and cinnamon. THIS I use in times of desperation. lol Buford--I cannot wait for the hill to burst into bloom. This is year 3....the long awaited year of maturity. I'd say a quarter of the roses up there are at or above 3 yrs old. They are really filling in and finally getting to that picture I have in my mind. The small side yard was a slope breaking away from the house. Horrible to mow and really bad on my bad knee. I elevated the side yard with cinderblocks and then veneered those. Then, against the house I addded a bed with a rock veneer wall. Now I can grow roses, perennials and even tomatoes in an area that was once only suitable for a billy goat. I finally feel like the 'bones' of the yard are done. There will always be things to play with...but I hope the hard labor is done. I am sure Tommy does too. lol Ronda...See Morewas told you guys would like this :)
Comments (35)Hi again Johanes. I had a look at your gallery pictures and I think I can help you with some identities. The white bulb in your garden looks like Ornithogalum nutans, Nodding Star of Bethlehem in English. The purply bulb is a Spanish bluebell, Hyacinthoides hispanica. It hybridises with the native bluebell in the UK and is endangering it, so if you have wild bluebells nearby you might want to get rid of the Spanish one. Of your wild flowers, the large purple one along the road is comfrey, Symphytum officinale. The bright blue one in the next photo looks like Bugloss, Lycopsis arvensis or Alkanet, Anchusa officinalis, but without seeing the whole plant I can't be certain. It's certainly in the Boraginaceae. Your Silene looks like Silene vulgaris, Bladder campion. Your first 'cornflower' is perennial cornflower, Centaurea montana, known as Batchelor button in the US. The second cornflower is Centaurea cyanus. It is lovely to see it growing wild since it is well nigh extinct in the wild in the UK due to intensive farming. I am stumped by the tall white plant on the burial mound - it is not something I have ever seen before and as I can't see the flowers clearly I can't even place it in a family. A wild guess from what I can make out might tower cress, Arabis turrita, an introduction to N Europe from S Europe. You could google it and see if it looks right....See MoreYou guys like pics right?
Comments (13)Thanks for your comments everyone, I am having the time of my life watching the changes each day. Jo, I have 74 so far although some are duplicates and some in the ground which are surrounded with weeds and am embarrased to show lol. I am not sure if that Undulata is medio or uni, hopefully someone might let me know. Am trying to convert the sister lol, she has a 3/4 acre garden to plant from scratch, will start her with a few pots of old reliables. James, yes I ordered a few from bali-hai before I found out about the dutch guys from you guys and probably will give him a miss in future as his plants are so small also the exchange rate is does not help, I am converted to Mr VDT! I do have a lot of space but as I expand it is such a lot more to maintain but cramed with hosta, weeds will have no where to grow, I need some staff lol. Thanks for looking folks, the camera will be busy this year! I will Probably make it over 100 this year, but I probably won't aquire more than Mocc lol. Denis P.s. Don, you being the resident Guacamole expert/addict lol, Is she slow to get going in the spring? she is up but not doing much yet, thanks....See MoreWhy was I stressing; the cabinet guy didn't even show today
Comments (8)I think I would move on to someone else. It sounds like this guy has a poor work ethic, as well as being downright strange. I hope you didn't pay out a huge deposit. The extra stress isn't worth the money lost, or the toll on your health. By the way, I found hiring a builder caused WAY more stress than DIY building. My husband and I have built three homes. Two we built with our own sweat. The third we hired a builder. Never again. We sold that house, bought some land, and are in the process of building a log home, ourselves. Fortunately, we know some local trades people, who are wonderful to work with, for the large jobs that we need extra people for. Good luck. I'll be looking for a good cabinet maker also, as the quality of the ready made seems to be poor these days. Sandy...See Moremaire_cate
