I don't know what system..or Windows version...you have, Kevin...but I can offer a couple of suggestions. If you're trying to "fix" an error in your system...do a restore to an earlier version by using System Restore. That may solve the problem without much fuss and bother.

Another tool to correct system issues would be to run a Command Prompt using it as Administrator. Go to Start>Accessories>Command Prompt and enter chkdsk C: /r [that's a small letter R after the forward slash] after your computer name as it appears. It'll tell you it can't run because the volume is in use and asks if you would like to schedule it to run the next time your system restarts. Click on the "Y" and hit enter. Then restart your system. This tool will scan your system and depending how much you have on your system...it may take a while. I keep my own system very slim and sleek...and this scan has taken over an hour when I have used it.

Beyond these two suggestions...to offer more help...more information is needed from your end. For example...what has necessitated this request. You can always go to Start and enter "data" in the search box. That will bring up a myriad of tools/suggestions.

Good luck.

Hi All, My problem is not setting up users and allowing people to enter their own data. I have not, however, posted a database to a website before. Also, the database structure is not complete, nor is the basic data population. I was hoping to have it up and running before too long, but given what's left and other time constraints, it's looking like it might be mid-06 before I will have it ready. Another problem (and a more important issue) is support. I don't think this will be a valuable tool if only a few people participate (otherwise we can just rely on the information provided by UCD). If enough people are interested, I'm willing to put the effort into finishing the database and getting a home on the WWW for it. Also, so that we can begin tracking data from the cuttings that are swapped this coming year, I can send out a blank Excel spreadsheet. People can put in basic information about their trees and I can import it into the database. Let me know what you think. ~james

This site has a lot of potential, but seems to have a few teething troubles. Some of the "review" pages don't seem to work. For example I see: Internal error "Fatal exception of type MWException" when I click on: http://juanitospeppers.com/wiki/Habanero_Paper_Lantern_review_001 or http://juanitospeppers.com/wiki/Habanero,_Chocolate_review_001 Another problem I see right now is that many of the pages are editable that probably shouldn't be, e.g. the search page, the "How to Contribute" page and all of the glogs. Not sure if this is easy to change? It would also be nice if it had it's own top-level domain name. Call it juanitospepperwiki.com or something. One more thing - you might want to consider making it mandatory for email address to be provided for membership. It's too easy for someone of a malicious nature to create an account for the sole purpose of messing up a bunch of pages. This post was edited by leesouthern on Thu, Feb 5, 15 at 11:41

I kept getting reminders to download Windows 10, I'd say "later". Than last night I got a message that the download would begin in seven hours. I think I had reserved a download way back when. I had heard alot of scary stories so was worried, but decided "what the heck". Instead of putting it off I'd let it go and download. If I couldn't work with it or hated it, I'd take it to Staples and have them remove it. Went away and came back to the timers saying it was 75% downloaded! Ok - here we go. And guess what? Like others have mentioned, I don't see much difference at all! Only the My Picture file, that appears differently but not something I can't get used to. All my other files and programs and even desktop display and icons are right where I left them. However, when I put my camera card into the PC to download photos to my computer, things were definitely different - mainly the file folder where the imported photos go to. I'll have to fool around with it some more to figure out how to do it as smoothly as I could with Windows 7. So far, no problems anywhere else - knock on wood. Plus I don't use my computer for business so I don't have those type of files and software to deal with.

This is somewhere between a business and a personal collection. I'm small enough that for now and the next few years a simple database where I can keep track of botanical name, common name and some cultural info and a photo. Mostly so I can confidently say to a customer ( all 7 of them I expect over the next few years) what the name of the plant is. I have been very lax with plants in my own garden, which will be the main supply of plants for sale, as far as keeping track of specific varietal names. Yes it's a hosta, but if I don't document I won't remember in a few years (Ok could be a few months :o) ) which it is. I have Office 2007. Excel is good for the text, but not so great for adding the photo. I looked at the templates for Access, but didn't see one for plants. It may be I need a newer version to get access to those.

Will your copy of Access will open a different database file ? If yes, then the problem file is probably corrupted. If no, perhaps your installation of Access is having a problem. You could try to open the problem file with a different program (Libre Office, perhaps) just as a test. You might get lucky. Beyond that, I've got nothing except perhaps a reinstall of Access. For future reference...it's so quick and easy to save a duplicate of an important file and avoid all this headache. Just FILE | SAVE AS and give it a slightly different name or save it in another folder.

I think Excel can open many Access files. If the file is corrupt then that's a different story.

This is a program or file problem, not an OS issue. Doing a restore accomplishes nothing. It's also highly unlikely to be fixed by chkdsk, which looks to file read/integrity assessments (from an OS rather than an app perspective) and bad disk sectors. A corrupt data file can be fine as far as the system is concerned but because of erroneous or invalid fields, can't be used by the program it belongs to.

Kevin, there are MS and Access forums, that's a more likely source of knowledgeable help for you to pursue.

Elmer is right, by all means please fix your database file, or even reinstall Access.

Don't touch OS such as doing a system restore or reinstalling if you don't have to especially on a Wintel computer.
