Questions about scullery/butler's pantry
I will finishing remodeling in about a month on a midcentury modern home. The kitchen is wide open to the house and is bordered on one side by walls of glass, so it is visible from outside and multiple rooms.
I have 4 small parrots. I have wanted someplace to keep their food, as well as the nespresso machine, etc. from cluttering the kitchen. I finally decided that the room with the AC handlers and w/d might be a good spot. It is off the kitchen. It is 11 feet wide and with cabinets would have a 4 ft. Wide aisle. I would bust through wall at one end into the adjoining bedroom to create a laundry/bike room, passable from the kitchen through the scullery.
- Would you want a scullery in the same room as your AC handlers? They will be covered with modern sliding panel doors. They will not be visible, but you will hear them.
- I want to add a dishwasher and under counter freezer. Would it be weird to have these appliances so far from the kitchen? The long row of floating cabs has two single drawer dw's but I am thinking of removing one to make more storage.
The interior designer helped me with these basic plans when we met last week. Does it make sense? The circled area will be custom built pantry. The ceilings are only 7 ft. In that room. I will make it light and bright with white quartz, white heath tile backsplash and walnut cabs. Thanks!!!
The scullery is in yellow. The circled area will be the pantry.
It would have walnut cabs, quartz counter, heath tile backsplash.
Kitchen. Scullery and pantry are behind the appliances.
The sliver of door behind the appliances would be the scullery.
Door on the left would go into scullery. Door on right will got away. It will be accessible from inside scullery. It will be replaced with dry wall to hang art on.
All the bike stuff will move and this will become pantry. The doorway on the left will become scullery.

Moroccan is so hot right now, there are some very cool encaustics, new and old. I had a link but can't find it on my iPad. For new stuff, try Tabarka Art - it could be a great space for a line up of small framed oils. I always see lovely little painting but wonder where to put them. Or specimen boxes. Comments (15)Sadly each of us seems to be recommending a modification to your footprint. If possible, I would put more space at the front of the auto slot adjacent to the kitchen and I would move the pantry and the mudroom into that new space so that the mud room faces the staircase that way people coming out of the mudroom can go straight to the stairs and it would also it would give you the shortest walk with your bags of groceries. I completely side with those who insist that there must be some kind of a bed/bath downstairs. Even though you don't intend to age in place anyone of you or your children could have an accident that makes it impossible to go up and down the stairs for some months and assorted older relatives may visit and be unable to do the stairs as well...or they very well may be able to do the stairs but you don't want them upstairs. I personally would flip the locations of dining room and the kitchen. You have indicated that the dining room is to take advantage of the views but the person doing the work in the kitchen is the person most in need of the views. The cook could look out over the main kitchen sink to the outside and the people sitting at what would be the new breakfast bar area on the island would also be facing outside if you flipped the island and dining room table. Also it would put the kitchen between the dining room and the covered porch which probably will also have a table for eating outside when the weather is fine. I also think it will look strange to have an island that is bigger than the dining room table and to step through this relatively large front entryway into the kitchen. Usually kitchens are accessed from the back door only. Of course the drama of the views and custom cabinetry may make this a moot point. This is such an open plan it seems to me that even with a great hood you run the risk that the living room will always smell of cooking. One miscellaneous note, with these views you may anticipate having no window coverings and it may make it difficult to see any television set which I presume will be located in the living room because there is no family room. Comments (38)gaonmymind- thanks for the mls link, it was interesting. I'm surprised that the RE agent didn't have nicer pictures taken, especially for home at that price point. I suppose that they are not permitted use the ones from the SL mag spread. As to why I don't want a closed of dining room instead, well I think the issue is that the mess is in the kitchen and I want to avoid seeing it from the dining room *and* elsewhere if at all possible. Closing off the dining room would only solve the problem while dining. I would still see the mess from the living room, the foyer, or pretty much anywhere else on the first floor. Closing off one small portion of the kitchen seems like an easy way to contain a good part of the mess to a small, less visible spot. For me washing dishes is drudge work no matter where the location. My proposed scullery has a window and will be just as nice as the kitchen so it's not as if I'm sending myself down to the dungeon to clean up. As far as space, I've always found dishwashing to be a one person task (that person being me) and even when the kids are older and do help, I imagine it will be more along the lines of asking them to unload the dishwasher or to simply load their plate- a one person at a time sort of thing. Even with their help, I'm fairly certain that I will still appreciate having an out of sight spot where I can place dirty pots and pans so that they don't bother me while I spend time with my family in other parts of the house. I'm still in the very early preliminary stages of planning our new build, so I have lots of time to figure how to make an open concept home work for me and our family. I've considered other ways, like a raised island and even a custom build hutch semi-separating the kitchen from the dining space. I may include those ideas along with the scullery, I'm not sure. For now though, I'm really intrigued by the idea of having a scullery space and I plan to continue tweaking my design. We were going to sell our 5 bedroom house and build a “smaller” 2B2B barndominium, but plans changed due to my dad getting sick and not wanting us to move away from me. So we have decided to renovate what we have and incorporate the things I wanted into this house but I have no clue where to start. This house had NO storage. We have extra rooms I want to make one a butlers pantry that connects to my kitchen and the other I want to make a master closet. Any ideas would be appreciated...See Morerockybird

7 years agoTHanks LInelle. I thought I read that the dw should be on the left of the sink for right handed people, somewhere. It makes more sense to me that it would be on the right for a right handed person. I met with the cabinet maker today. I am thinking I will not put a dw in as I dont really need it.
It didnt occur to me until now that I dont have a trash receptacle drawer. Would you add one? The aisle will be 48", so maybe I would have room to put a trash can like below somewhere on the ground?
