Black Dragon rose?
Comments (30)I Googled "Simsalabim" the other day and found a post which stated it was German for "Abracadabra", which makes sense. Kordes introduced Frisco, a yellow florist HT in the late 80s. It sported to Black Beauty in 1999, kind of a dramatic mutation from bright yellow to deep red! Black Beauty sported to Hocus Pocus in 2000 which then mutated to Abracadabra in 2002. Take a look at Simsalabim. Isn't it precisely what you would expect as a partial reversion of either Abracadabra or Hocus Pocus back to Frisco? Based upon flower appearance and the fact Kordes introduced them all, combined with the German translation of Simsalabim, I strongly suspect it is a partial reversion toward Frisco. Being such unstable sports of the same rose, be aware it is totally possible for any of them to mutate or revert easily, without warning, as shown on several photos on HMF, so no matter which you buy, there is no guaranty what it's going to flower in your garden. Comments (107)Indeed, Wolfgang, thank you! The color was not nearly this beautiful last Winter. Only the lower branches turned bright rusty orange; and the new growth turned bright cream. Last Winter, the intermediate purplish hues were absent. I'm hoping for an even more impressive show next Winter. We have had a mild Winter so far, with no snow and very little rain. Our temperatures have ranged from overnight lows in the 20F's (-5C to 0C) to daytime highs in the 60F's (17C). I think all of these have contributed to the coloring. Comments (15)i doubt this means anything in z9 .. lol ... but here in z5 ... frost and cold weather trigger color change ... as well as other variables not pertinent to the discussion ... anyway .. back to frost .... on my 5 acres.. i can have some hosta stay alive weeks longer than others ... simply on where the cold hits in the yard ... in other words.. temperature variations vary wildly inside one yard.. let alone two nurseries.. let alone adding your garden to the mix ... exterior bronzing is normal for crypto's .. interior green is perfect ... just pray the bronze doesnt turn to khaki or tan .. which is dead tissue ... i question how you can be so sure of the proper name.. on a one gallon sized plant.. when the color.. according to your own research, indicates that BD isnt supposed to do that .... unwinding and transplanting the thing is a horrible shock.. all and all ... so its entirely possible that that has something to do with the color change ... good luck ken...See MoreFirst Impressions of Black From Tula, L.R. Comments (6)I've grown each of these once, in different years. I loved Black from Tula. Large Red Cherry was one of the very few that I pulled out -- I found it just about inedible with a tough skin and no flavor. JBT tasted ok, but it didn't produce much the one time I grew it, and IIRC it did get some BER. I'm growing Cherokee Purple for the second time. The first time, the squirrels took a bite from almost every one before it was fully ripe. I think I got to taste one, which was good. This year, it's my best-producing medium-size tomato with a good, but very mild, flavor and great texture. Last year, Black Krim was one of the best ones I grew -- great taste, but very perishable, and it produced so much that I was giving them away until I cooked with one and discovered how incredibly rich and luscious it tasted as a cooked tomato. For a cherry tomato that is large and red, I haven't found anything better than Tommy Toe -- wonderful flavor and incredible production all season. (I've also tried Juliet, Camp Joy, Chadwick Cherry, Sweet Chelsea, Riesentraube, and maybe one or two more.)...See MoreHerman Sherman
