You may want to consider having a carpet or even a remnant cut to size and binded. Most carpet stores offer the service and pricing wise it can be a very affordable project.

Would an 11 by 13ft be too wide?

We had 2 custom rugs made for our DR and LR when we first moved here. We weren't ready to invest in Persians since we had 3 kids under the age of 5 and 2 big dogs - plus we hadn't decided on how we'd decorate the more formal rooms.

We had 2 wool Axminster area rugs cut and instead of just binding the raw edges we used a co-ordinating rug in a muted print and had it sewn around the perimeter of the solid rug. It functions like a 6" border and adds some interest to the room. And as it turns out - we liked them enough that we never bought other rugs.

maire_cate, great idea. I just don't want a plain rug with no interest after having had an Oriental there. Brushworks, I didn't know Shaw had a department for cutting and finishing rugs. Good to know. Thanks.

I had a rug with a pattern cut down/bound several years ago, our local carpet ( not rug) store did this as a service and I think the charge was by the foot.

This one is not oriental, however something like this with a pattern would still look fine if you needed to have it cut down to have it more narrow as long as the kept the pattern in the center and added the binding so that it was all the way around.

golfergirl - Our decorator suggested it and the best part is that it was not very expensive. The primary expense is the cost of the carpet itself. The corners of the border are mitered and the border is sewn and glued.

I agree with maire_cate....go with a Persian rug. Also, there are MANY online at eBay for good prices.
