When we're there, we are usually in a hurry to shop so just grab something at Hale and Hearty and eat in the common area seating. They are a chain but the soups, salads and sandwiches are interesting and good and accommodate a variety of dietary needs. Their menu changes frequently.

Then go to Union square Farmers market, and walk to Eataly for dinner.

Much as I'd love that, we'll only get a short time for lunch, then off to the Pier, then after the tour, back on the bus to Philly.

What a great day you have planned. With travel time that is a full day but not too much.

I was just about to post/link that one and a similar article. Something for everyone and much more. I was nearby yesterday and thought to have lunch but the crowds keep NewYorkers away unless off hours. When i do have the time i'm on the seafood.

A nice browse is the restaurant style supply store far back west side. It is packed with hard-to-find kitchen stuff.

We are here, or about 3 blocks into the burbs from the official city limits. It's a wonderful area. Thanks to all, we love your input. The kitchen supply store is on my list! (Sorry, no pictures, I don't do cameras!)

You are where? Chelsea Market or in the Philly burbs? Inquiring minds want to know! Is this permanent or just a visit?

We moved to the Philly area in the spring. Jim's company got bought out, and they got rid of everyone. He had planned to work for a couple more years, but at the same time his macular degeneration was getting worse. And his family in California were all moving away anyway. Our son and his family are here, so we said, why not?

We sold our house in February, got here in March, had a furnished apartment, then moved into this house in late May. We love love love it. And yes, no snow yer.....

We decided on lunch at the oyster bar next to the fish market, because these old people needed to sit down. Best Bloody Mary and lobster roll and great chowder. Two thumbs up. I wanted another Bloody Mary, but then I might have fallen asleep on the boat. The whole of Chelsea Market is amazing, and we peeked into every shop.... the cheese selection at the Italian grocer's was incredible, as was the butcher shop. We barely got to see the High Line, Jim doesn't walk as far as he used to, but it's just a perfect thing. We want to come back in the full of the season; right now the gardens are a little worn.

But the boat ride all around Manhattan was simply amazing. Even the 10 minutes spent stopped was idyllic, as we were waiting for another train to cross the railroad bridge at the top of the island so they could swing open the bridge to allow us to pass. Weather was gorgeous, I didn't need a jacket at all. The architect's commentary didn't sound scripted, but like you were with a friend. They give this tour every day, I recommend it to anyone who lives there but hasn't done it, and especially to all visitors to the city. Yes, the wine and canapes were so-so, but at least served in real wine glasses and real plates, I was expecting plastic! The architectural tours are every day. Highest recommendations.. AIA Architectural tours of New York.

You should try the boat ride at night.

Big changes from Northern Calif to Philly! But I'm sure being near the grands and having special time with family is all in the grand plan! Enjoy your new digs and have fun exploring your new states!

Wow, lots of changes, good luck with them all. Philadelphia is a city I'd like to visit sometime, there's so much history there.

Lobster rolls? OK, you got me, I don't even need a picture. I can't imagine a better lunch than that.

Funny how sometimes those retirement decisions seem to be made for us, no matter our plans. Good luck with retirement!

When I was there this summer, we had street tacos (can't remember the place). They were great.

There is hardly anywhere to sit in the CM though -- so, you have to be ok with standing and eating.

Afterward, we walked the high-line in 93 degree weather!! Didn't see much, other than scaffolding...

Oh, Annie, I missed your comment. We do have a guest room and are 3 or 4 blocks from the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philly. Come visit!

Yeah, little seating at the restaurants, which is one reason why we chose the pricey raw bar, plus I got a Bloody Mary for lunch, which is always a celebratory vacation drink for me. The taco place looked very very good, and I intend to try it next time.

But the amazing part of the day was the tour around Manhattan. Unforgettable.

Sushi, I'd LOVE to come and visit, I just have to add it to my list of places I need to see. I've been to Gettysburg but Elery has not. Elery hasn't even seen Yellowstone, so now he's had his hip AND his knee replaced we need to downsize the farm and start going places. Philadelphia and Washington DC for the Smithsonian, Yellowstone and Cody and the Tetons and Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore and.....

Well, you get my drift, LOL. We'd have to drive, no way would Elery ever leave his dog in a kennel, he'd miss her more than he'd miss me, I think.
