Walking, along with power walking is a good habit to take up. Good for the whole body. don't you think so? :) Dena

Yes -- instead of coming straight home I did 20 minutes roundabout. It's amazing though how far you can go at a brisk pace in twenty minutes. New studies show that avoiding heart disease calls for much more than 20 minutes a day -- still I don't denigrate any good effort.

Well, one can start out doing a short walk, and then gradually extend it.

I'll be building a walkout basement almost entirely on grade and be grading up front and sides up 10'+ high basement from around 100' - 150' away. Admittedly it will take an enormous amount of fill which I have access to however have to hire transport to cart soil from around three miles away.

Thanks for this new link, Harry. I've been using the old one for quite some time. They've left it up, but not sure if they update it regularly. The link you gave has a different layout, making it possible to look up cultivars alphabetically with a click. On the old one, there is lots of scrolling involved. Both have their good & bad points. :) I just noticed that the new site has a link to the old ICN Website. And please post when you do get the plans so we can see. We're all house junkies on this forum. (For example, one of my favorite things to do is go on Sunday's to look at open houses and I bet I'm not the only one!) I can't speak for how to interview or questions to ask, but can suggest some things once you've narrowed it down to the "one". Start putting together pictures of homes you like, rooms you like, etc. The more research you do like that, and you'll start to see patterns in what you like. Put a list together of MUST HAVES for your home. Put together a second list of wish to haves and a third list of I'm dreaming but wouldn't it be nice because you never know when a good architect or designer can add in your dream wishes too. If you must have certain rooms near one another, spell that out roughly. As I said, I wanted the view from my great room/master/dining room/DH's study to be my pool and back yard and I wanted my rooms to create a backyard courtyard feel. I also wanted my laundry near my bedroom but didn't need a laundry room. Have your budget in mind. Know your priorities. It's obvious that you're not looking for a large house. Do you want to be able to have more details like crown moldings, wainscoting, etc? One thing though is DO put that garage in now. The cost really is minimal. :) Best of luck. Keep an open mind and don't rush the process. I started in March and thought I'd have it worked out by the summer. HAH! Getting it right on paper is a lot cheaper than having to make changes once you start building.

Lily, in 2015, he developed hyper-thyroid. He was losing weight, yet ate all the time, and also drank more water. I suspected the thyroid or diabetes. He was on medication and strict blood-work monitoring to check his T levels. Did you know that cats hoarking fur-balls isn't normal? I thought it was. That can be attributed to IBD (irritable bowel disease). He got that as well. Prednisone helped with that. I also gave him slippery elm bark that I mixed into a syrup which soothes their intestines. A lot of animals use this to help with digestive issues. The past few weeks, he drank too much water and peed it all out. Nothing I gave him, he had any desire to eat. He'd eat just morsels of food. I was giving him food several times/day and it was very inconvenient, but just to get him to eat enough. Everything from raw, $3 tins of cat food to kitty-crack (Fancy Feast). I didn't care what he ate, as long as he ate something. Often he'd turn his nose up at it, and I had several opened tins of food in the frig. He developed Stage 2 kidney disease a couple of months ago. Age is a bitch, for pets and humans alike.

I agree with you dena. It excerises just about everything but with little strain. And as we get fitter, our pace and everything can increase. Little by little and later, lot by lot. Plus it's free. And you see lots of nice things.

I am meant to be out there right at this minute but just wanted to check gardenweb and have some coffee. Off now though : )

Agree. This past spring, I got a fitbit. Started started walking in the neighborhood, which is quite hilly. When the weather got hot, I went to the mall and walked. Did four miles one day, but my hips hurt afterwards, so I limit myself to three miles. I walk 4 to 5 days/week. Lost ten pounds. Don't want to lose any more, but I am still walking. Ten feet in elevation counts (on the fitbit) as a flight of stairs. I average 19 flights of stairs. The tricky part is keeping my back straight when going up.

For the last year, my blood tests showed I had prediabetes. My husband and I started walking in mid January--about a mile a day--and blood tests in early March said I'd edged blood sugars down to just below prediabetes--in just about 7 weeks.

That was so encouraging! We're still walking, and I hope to lower blood sugars even more!

Another way to lower your blood sugar is to lose between 5% and 7% of your body weight. IOW, if you weigh 170 lbs., lose 8.5 to 12 lbs. Diabetes is real (I'm dealing with T2D right now). When I was diagnosed 6 months ago, I went to a healthier way of eating, and gradually worked in some exercise -- mostly walking and a TV program called "Classical Stretch" (PBS). I've lost 30 lbs (18% of my body weight), and my blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels all dropped back into the normal levels. Wish I'd done that earlier, before my pancreas revolted and now I'm saddled with the D label!
