pls help me identify this tree: pink bud scented long green leaves

Its got green foliage and pink scented buds. The leaves are long. It smells a bit like bubblegum.

In case anyones interested I think I figured it out. Its called Port Wine Magnolia aka Banana Shrub. Hope that helps anyone else who is stuck

Magnolia Soulagnea, Chinese Pink Saucer Magnolia. Those buds will open up into big saucer-shaped flowers. They also bloom in spring before foliage.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've looked at quite a few pictures of 'erica', it is by far the closest match I've seen yet. The only differences are the flowers on mine were flat (not bell shaped) and the leaves/foliage were long and fine. Seems a strange thing to say but the whole plant looked kind of 'fluffy' from a distance with the flowers growing towards the middle/base with the long fine green foliage protruding above..???

When you say striped, are the stripes red and white? The only great red and white striped rose of recent entry is Fourth of July, but it has large hips. Could the small hips have come from a nearby rose. The pink one ...I agree the leaves are HT-ish, but this season most HTs are making sprays, but we don't see other buds up there. The one rose that I have that fits that is the old van Fleet rose 'Mary Wallace'. But I wouldn't bet on that being right. Out in left field would be the possibility that it's the Hybrid Perpetual Arillaga.

Oh no! It's spreading! The drinking and posting thing. just joking, but, Johnd your post is a bit strange sounding, i am not judging you, I have made many an assanine post on here while under the influence. One recently directed at Ken. I cringed when i read it sober. I see you said it is tongue in cheek though. Maybe you were poking fun at me, but maybe not. I am going to try to not be an ass on this forum, I think that would be best no matter what. But anyhoo, I thi nk those buds are "oaklike" and not like any Beech I have ever seen.

The picture that says "are they phlox or something else?" looks a lot like Physostegia / Obedient plant to me. whoever buys my place will probably scalp the entire 26 garden beds i have nurtured for the past 12 years and put in hardscape or a pool. breaks my heart, but nothing i can do about it Roxanna, there are things you can do before you leave your gardens - you can open your gardens to gardening friends or neighbors for give-aways, donate plants to a local or charity plant sale, sell or give away on Craigslist or Freecycle. People will even come and dig stuff up for you. Better than those lovely plants being scalped!

Interiorinspirations, you are right, your plant is Magnolia figo aka Banana Shrub or Port Wine Shrub.

It is not Magnolia soulangeana (sp) which is a deciduous Spring bloomer and bears little resemblance to your tree.

Again...Logan strikes out!

It's definitely a Magnolia figo Port Wine cultivar. I've always thought that these pretty little flowers smell like banana popsicles.
