Succulents stretching out

Hi everyone,

So my succulents aren't getting so much light these days as it gets colder. So they started to stretch out and lean to the side. I was wondering if keep them in artificial light in days there's not much sunlight will prevent the problem ? And can i use any type of light ? Or it has to be the specific one for growing plants ?

Anything you can do to approximate full outdoor sun - short of burning the plants with hot bulbs - should bring an improvement.

How long are they in lower light? Days are much shorter now and all plants are getting much less light. Supplemental lights help with indoor growing. You didn't mention what is your general location? - it would be nice to indicate by putting it (or at least a growing zone) next to your name...Hopefully, they lean for the same reason and not for another problem. Photos will help.

Cut them into two and you can root the tops and grow the bottoms into gradually-increasing amounts of light. No, I wouldn't do that - I'd cut off the top and leave the babies and the bottom portion as is. The babies will grow better that way.

They are reaching for more light. To keep these guys compact they need a good amount of sun. If these were mine I would start all over by cutting off the top. Let callous for a day or two and then replant. If you can they would do better outside. Before you put in sun or water make sure they have roots and introduce them to the sun slowly. They may burn if not ready. Lastly, take some leaves off to propagate. Goodluck:)

Thank you so much! These are my first, I bought them at Walmart a couple weeks ago. I tried to put them in a better drainage mixture and have set them on the windowsill. Where I live has just barely started to get some better weather so I’m hoping they’ll get better too!

From my experience when they need more light just before they start stretching the leaves tend to flatten out more as if they’re trying to open up wide to let in more light. Trying to get the most out of whatever available light there is. Thats what I’ve noticed anyway.

I use these light fixtures. I haven't much experience with the spectrum LEDs but I've heard from reliable friends that they are primarily used for seed starting and sproutlings that need to get established. Seems like they don't have the strength the T5 lights do for older plants. As for any artificial lighting, you will want it as close to the plant as possible without the plant burning or becoming stressed. It's a trial and error sort of thing.

As for whether you do this or not is up to you, but I tend to think that vastly varying types of light in a plants life is bad for it if you want it to get enormous or live for many years but I don't have much experience with that, or any proof that this is true.
