Co-dominant stem breakage - can it survive?

Hi - I believe this is a Chinese Pistache in front of my house in San Jose, CA area...I did not plant it so am not sure. I woke up this morning and the tree has split at the co-dominant joint (please excuse if I am off on the technical term). The tree is about 11 years old and provides good shade for the south-facing front of the house. There was black discoloration at the top of the joint.

I cut off the split a few inches above where it emerged from the trunk. Any suggestions on how to save the rest of the tree would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.
