Polished vs honed
Comments (15)Thank you for this thread! I am considering leathering a piece of scrap sandstone that has fossils in it. There is no sample though.. I could probably ask the yard to do that but I'm not sure how necessary the extra step is. OTOH I'm not exactly certain what it might look like leathered. Can anyone help? From what I'm reading in archives and here, it sounds to me as if the leathering will bring out textures such as the fossils. That's probably a great idea, except I worry it's a pain to clean. Not that this will be in a terribly cleaning-intensive location. It's a bathroom that functions as a powder room. So people will be using the sink fairly frequently, just not leaving wine stains and the like. But do you think water splashes would pool in indents and maybe with time gunk those indents up? Because I'm guessing there's not going to be a whole lot of wiping-down going on.... Can anyone hazard a guess as to how polished vs leathered would look in this instance? I wish I had a picture of the stone but I forgot to snap one. Dumb! If the yard sends one I'll post it. Thanks, all!...See MorePolished nickel vs polished chrome
Comments (11)Thanks - that's helpful to know that the nickel is a warmer tone. You can kind of see that the tone is slightly different in the pictures. I wonder if the patina thing happens with all or if that's a brand specific situation. I don't really want to get a patina like the ORB stuff I bought years back. My new faucet is chrome. I will never again buy any faucet that isn't classic chrome as I'm so tired of the trendy finishes that go out of style. I don't particularly like silver hardware on a medium/light cabinet but I also don't want trendy bronze that will also go out of style. So I will probably go with some combo of chrome/polished nickel and brushed nickel so at least it's all the same color. This isn't a high end remodel, just a minor update of a small guest bathroom that isn't used that often. It all started with ancient wallpaper removal and then I decided to replace the cheap, ugly vanity and medicine cabinet and then the hanging brass light fixture had to go. On and the door that swings out into the hall will be changed to swing into the bathroom. What were they thinking.........See MoreMatte Black vs Oil Rubbed Bronze Hardware
Comments (12)Rubber oil bronze is a bit more traditional (with hints of real metal coming through) while flat black is more contemporary. Either could look striking given the description of dark oak and black countrrtops it really becomes a preference. The key decision in my mind would be, what are the switches and light fixtures (in that particular room specifically) ? if your house has an open floorplan its also OK to do "zone" design meaning whats in the kitchen can have a contrasted finish from the livingroom. a side note if going with lots of dark both in fixtures and cabinets (and/or appliances and sink) be sure to bring in light for contrast, either with lots of daylight (windows), flooring, upholstery or in the adjacent space so the eye can flow or pop. Having multiple shades and texture of the same family can be beautiful but too mucb of a good thing can make it overwhelming. best of luck....See MoreHow is your Delta Trinsic or Essa Faucet in Matte Black?
Comments (12)I am a little surprised to hear about the water spots. I assumed otherwise (like a black car or black granite, but I guess those surfaces are shiny). Nice to hear that's not a concern. A polished faucet was out for me for that reason, and we don't have any other polished silver in the kitchen. I am still undecided about whether we should do a stainless or a black finish. Stainless will blend into the counters (white/grey granite) and the black will definitely stand out. The faucet will be front and center in the island, not tucked away under a window. There will be an air switch and a soap dispenser (also in black). The chicken in me says go stainless and it will blend in more...but I do love the look of the black. Kitchen hardware and door hardware throughout the house will be black. Those with black faucets, do you have black sinks, or stainless/something else? It's ok to mix, right? Stainless sinks are here and not easily returnable. I think we are set on returning the Kohler faucet, but now I'm not sure if we'll get the Delta in black or stainless. Leaning towards the Trinsic (#1 or #2), but the Essa (#3 or #4) might be easier to wipe down....See MoreOakley
