Leave it alone- it's a very young tree and needs every leaf it has to
manufacture energy. Let it develop the way it wants to for at least a
couple of years- there's plenty of time for shaping later on after it
has established itself well in it's final spot. Make sure not to plant
it too deeply- the part where the trunk widens into the roots needs to
be visible. Also check to see if the roots are circling- if they are
you'll need to gently straighten them out. Then mulch it well but not up
against the bark.

There has been posting in the past to the effect that Autumn Blaze ('Jeffersred') has an untidy internal structure with numbers of branches going every which way within the overall, otherwise compact shape. So I wouldn't bother with trying to force yours to have stereotype perfect branching, it runs against the nature of the beast.

One thing I would do is think about moving it farther away from the house, during the winter when it is leafless. Both parents of Freeman maple produce large trees more than 60 ft. tall, and this particular selection is known to form a comparatively broad crown. Here, where Freeman maples have been much planted in commercial centers and similar settings many of them are now looking out of scale, with crowns too tall, trunks and roots too big for their planting sites.

Thanks! That is not where it's planted at, that's where it was set down before it's final spot was decided. I have it out front of the house with an open sky above it and 30 feet in all directions from the house and sidewalks. My main issue was that I didn't want the tree to grow out and not up, due to me not doing something correctly. I appreciate the input from everyone.
