NEED HELP...Lennox HVAC Package Recommendation?

Hi All,

This site has been invaluable while we build our home! Seeking expert opinions.

We are building a ~2400 sq. ft. ranch in upstate NY. The home has 10' ceilings, hickory solid 4.25" hardwood floors, and two step crown molding throughout the entire home. We will have two Heat n Glo 6000clx gas fireplaces in the home. One in our Great Room and one in our Master Bedroom. See attached for our floorplan. At some point in the near future, we plan finishing the basement.

Our builder works with a local HVAC company that only deals Lennox products.

The new home comes STANDARD with the following:

* Furnace: Lennox ML195UH

* AC: Lennox 13ACX036

* We were thinking about adding the Lennox Whole Home Humidifier HCWP18 (for the hardwood and crown molding) and the Lennox PUREAIR Whole Home Air Purifier.

I understand from reading other posts in this forum that builders tend to choose base models for HVAC systems. I don't want a base package if there is a better package I should be selecting and I am willing to invest additional if it makes sense.

I will also ask the HVAC company but before I do, I'd like to hear from the experts in the group since you have no vested interest in my selection.

If you were building this home, what package considering all factors (quality, cost, efficiency, practicality, fit, sizing, configuration, point of view).

Has the HVAC contractor done a load calculation? It appears the condenser is a 3 ton size, but there is no size for the furnace. A load calculation should always be done for new construction..

Why do you think you need an air purifier? If the home is tight a humidifier should not be needed. You can skip it initially and add it later.

If were up to me, I would want at least a 2-stage variable furnace, and a 2-stage AC condenser. It would add more comfort and a small energy savings. I could live without a WiFi thermostat, but it is nice for software updates.

Thanks Mike! Any specific models from the Lennox product offering you would recommend? Looking at our Sq. Footage, layout, etc. what would you recommend for BTUs and Tons?

As far as the humidifier, we were thinking it would be necessary since we live in the northeast and we are doing so much hardwood and crown moulding. Is that a valid concern?

The old line set (copper tubing) can be reused assuming it is the correct size of the new system. If not then it needs to be replaced. It is not the preferred method, but it is done where replacing the line set is difficult. The new refrigerant will be R410. The old refrigerant (R22) must be flushed out of the old line set otherwise you have a contamination problem. This is another reason why it is good practice to replace the line set. FYI - we can talk about prices all day long on this forum. Be warned the lowest bid usually comes with the highest risk. Finally this has been beaten to death, but let's make sure you understand the concept. You can use a 3.5 ton air handler with a 3 ton condenser. The important thing is the air flow is adjusted to the correct speed. The 3.5 ton rating is the maximum air flow, not the minimum. In turns out in this case the 3.5 ton air handler has better efficiency numbers than the 3 ton air handler. If the bigger handler can physically fit in the space, then you can use it. You have to then decide if the extra efficiency is worth the extra upfront cost of the equipment.

tigerdunes, The split system is the one that's down. The packaged unit works - the AC part, not so much, though - but we're planning on replacing everything at one time, including the outside AC on the split system since it started acting up this past summer as well. Our house is complicated - the original part of the house is a 900sq/ft ranch on a crawlspace with 2 bedrooms, den, bathroom and laundry room and that side is serviced by the package unit. The 'newer' side of the house is about 1200 sq/ft on a slab and a 2 story (well, 1 1/2, really) with the kitchen, living room and dining room downstairs and 2 small bedrooms and a bath upstairs. This side has one split system to service both levels. The current unit does (or did) a good job of circulating air both upstair and down, but one of the upstairs bedrooms is my husband's Man Cave and his computer equipment keeps the room hot. He uses a small window air conditioner in the summer just for his room to keep the equipment and himself cool. When both systems are running, we close a door (it's the original solid wood exterior door) between the 2 'wings' of the house so neither system is overworked. I'm scared of future propane prices, too. If money were no object I'd install geothermal, but unfortunately I'm not Bill Gates. :-) One other thing I'm concerned about is having enough electrical oomph to power a heat pump. The house is old and the wiring needs to be replaced anyway and I'm afraid we'd need to bring in an electrician for the heat pump. Or is the 200 amp service mainly for the heat strips in electric back up applications?

Creekside knew what you meant. Attic exhaust fans are one of the worst ideas going. They seem to make sense and in the right setting might help. But the reality is that most cause more harm than help. As you pull heat out of the attic, you depressurize it. That causes increased leakage out an average ceiling. I wonder if you sealed the ceiling really well, it an attic vent wouldn't be bad. I mean people like to talk about vent closing being very wasteful as the increased pressure causes increased leakage in the ductwork. Well this is all based on a study of fairly old houses. Take a well sealed duct system with fresh mastic everywhere and the downside of closed vents is reduced significantly. But as a rule of thumb, the average attic fan is a great big waste of energy. It does make you attic more comfortable though....

I am not that familiar with the Lennox equipment. You can do some research on their web site to see what is available. Look for models that have the features I suggested.

For you house and location I would think a 3 ton AC condenser and a 80K BTU furnace at 95%+ efficiency would be appropriate. But you should still have a load calculation to confirm the sizes.

Low humidity in the winter is usually caused by leaky windows and air infiltration. It should not be a problem with a new house especially if it has a basement. Humidifiers become maintenance headaches so it is best to avoid them if possible.
