Trane vs Goodman HVAC Unit
Comments (6)happs I will assume you are sized correctly but that is alot of firepower on the AC side and of course that furnace is only 80% efficient. I would prefer an upgrade price to the XR13, a nicer condenser than the XB series. And you might want to look at the XR15 in a 5 ton model. I believe the 5 ton comes with two stg and certainly would be a less expensive alternative to the XL20i condenser.Verify with dealer. The thermostat will work but it will not give you full two stg functionality. I would want a true two stg thermostat for that furnace. You get all kind of opinions of Goodman Brand. Better than they use to be in the higher end mdls. Low end stay away from. I personally would not have it for my home unless strictly budget driving my decision. I would want to know how long you intend to be in home. IMO...See MoreGoodman VS. Trane or Carrier HVAC installation advice
Comments (9)I'm learning more all the time. Can you tell me more about the TXV metering device for the E-Coil? My current 80% unit already has a condensate drain pump used when I run the AC in the summer and I have not had a problem with it. This self contained pump sits on the floor next to the furnace and pumps the condensate into my sump pump then the sump pump pumps it out of the house. Wouldn't I just run the high efficiency furnace moisture drain pipe out to the same pump? I have to imagine that moisture drain pipe is up high on the High Efficiency unit and my condensate pump is on the floor, gravity will do the job unless the pump fails and the water backs up into the furnace. Is that the same moisture drain pipe that I have on my current 80% efficiency furnace that drains the condensate when I run the AC in the summer? One of the quotes I got from a HVAC hybrid install (95% efficient furnace w/ 2 stage variable speed furnace and 15 or 16 SEER Heat Pump) was to put a catch pan under the furnace with the furnace up on blocks and put a pump in the drain pan that pumps the condensate water into my sump pump. This gives you more time to deal with a pump going bad vs the self contained pump I have currently. I have another question about buying the new 95% efficient furnace. My current furnace is 80% effecient and is 100,000 BTUs. I have replacement choices of 90,000 BTU or 115,000 BTU replacement. My house is 2000 sq. ft, not including basement. Is there much efficiency difference between the 2 choices? I know the bigger unit will probably supply more heat, but is that at more cost in energy? Or is the difference nominal. My first thought is to go with the bigger unit for only $100-$200 more in cost. Mikes...See MoreTrane vs Lennox Proposals to Replace HVAC
Comments (4)Both are good systems and reliable equipment. Personally I do favor and strongly recommend Trane equipment. Your bigger issues are finding the right installer and getting a load calc performed to determine sizing. I think 3.5 tons is definitely conservative for your climate but am more concerned about the quote for a 100k input furnace (Trane). Trane does in fact make an 80k furnace with a 4 ton blower that I am quite sure (confirmed by a load calc) would be more than enough to make your home comfortable all winter. Really no excuse to oversize furnaces for marginal efficiency gains that may or may not be realized taking into account the other losses/consequences of oversized equipment. The XB14 is a fine unit, very much like the XR15 with less sound deadening features and a different cabinet. If cost difference is not much more I would probably go with the XR to get the compressor sound blanket and slightly nicer cabinet. Would be more similar to the Lennox XP14 in terms of sound. But neither the XB14, XR15, or XP14 are loud units at all in my opinion. The IAQ is a great thermostat. Model number is YTH9421. Your contract lists an "8000 IAQ" -- this is ambiguous and misleading. I would want the IAQ set up for dehumidify on demand. By the way: new lineset or 4-5" filter included?...See MoreNew Construction HVAC Comfortmaker vs Trane
Comments (13)I'm not familiar with what is produced from the Manual J, what specific input are we looking for from the calc to review? I know it was done as its required in the building permit process here. I wasn't concerned about the BTU size, so I'm glad I asked. For Region 3 I had always understood it to be about 40 BTU per sqft for furnace so I figured it was ok. The house faces west and does have bigger windows on the west and east sides. The NG is a recent development (this was not known to the HVAC guy), would that change what you guys are looking at vs using LP / Heat pump combo? He did give me a price on the 2 stage furnace Trane XV-95 it was another $800 over the XT-95. A side note the HVAC guy made it sound like it was great that he actually got to talk with me as some builders like noted push HVAC to the side when its one of the most important items.... and they never get to actually talk with the homeowners. His overall recommendation to me was the XR-15 15 Seer Heat pump with Trane XV-95 based on LP. I know adding the heat-pump component is another $800 or so, perhaps with that removal I look at the better furnace. Based on the initial feedback I was starting to lean towards the XT-95 with a normal AC unit (XR14 or XR16)...See Moremaestro96
