I have included two terrible pictures. I could not get them to focus very good. 1) If your camera has a macro mode, use it. 2) Don't zoom in; move the camera closer. Keep the camera maximally zoomed out. 3) Have the subject well-lit.

Is it really big and look like a giant mosquito? (With a body that's an inch or more long? It might be a Crane Fly. The adults don't eat at all or just drink nectar. The larvae eat decaying vegetation, plant roots and stuff. Wikipedia says that sometimes larvae can damage lawns. I'm not sure how much (if at all) they are a threat to vegetable gardens or flowers. I’d say the larvae sounds like fungus gnat larvae so does the worm type things the larvae can range from clear to brownish and, it’s most likely if it is fungus gnats due to the dead nerve plant or overwatering or both add 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to your soap water mix (1 part peroxide to 4 parts water) spray the soil for 7 days or water your plants with it as a flush for the larvae get neem oil for the adult gnats if you start seeing them it also kills many other house plant pests and make sure it’s safe for your plants in particular.

Ah, yes. The ubiquitous leaf footed bugs! I grew up with them in TX. They supposedly inhabit MN, but I never saw any there. Apparently, they discovered the OR Trail, because they’re here, too. Honestly, their leafy spined legs are kinda cool. As a kid I tread lightly around them so that they wouldn’t startle and stink spray. They can cause some browning on rose blooms as they suck a bit of the juice with their snouty proboscis. Fortunately, they don’t usually become a huge issue, not like a plague of Japanese beetles or grasshoppers or (shudder) chili thrips. I get more of the shield bug types in my garden but usually just ignore them. Last year, I spotted a pile of variegated carpet beetles on my giant cow parsnip blooms (native not the invasive hogweed) and my La Ville de Bruxelles rose. I know carpet beetles are out there—flying around, hanging out in bird’s nests, feeding on pollen, etc.—but I seriously had to make myself take a deep breath and deal. I mean…carpet beetles! 😳 Carol
