My Very Dead Cactus
Comments (11)Sylvia, it will be their loss as you tried your best to care for the plant. You have to understand that not all cacti and succulents make ideal houseplants. Such plants thrive in extreme conditions in arid environments such as deserts and barren mountain cliffs. It would be insane to replicate such conditions within our living room. Having said that, we can always try to mimic the settings or at least provide the basic needs of such plants -- maximum light, minimum water/moisture and air flow. Light Grow light would definitely help supplement during the winter days when light is low and temps are freezing outdoors. I'm not sure what you mean by the real deal? Grow lights have to be at the right temperature and outputs setting in order for the plant to make use of it. If you shine a regular bedroom lamp towards the plant, it will not be beneficial whatsoever. If you have just a mini plant, you can try those table grow lamps, they are not space obstructive, but can only shower a few plants at a time. http://www.amazon.com/Lights-America-1147-Watt-Sunlight/dp/B003DRBOJ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448981299&sr=8-1&keywords=table+grow+lamp Moisture/Water This is still a hard skill to master even for the most proficient and experienced growers -- controlling the right amount of water your plant needs. Depending on watering techniques, growers here modify the soil to be drier/grittier so the plant won't drown in water when watering them. Airflow I know this sounds silly, but I have lost plants to excess heat from my grow lights and stale air before. I think about it, if you tied your pet dog under a roasting lamp with the windows shut tight and no ventilation whatsoever, The poor animal is set to be tortured and probably will die if you leave it on for a full day. Plants are also living things, and people tend to neglect that assuming they can tolerate whatever conditions you throw at them. True these plants can withstand harsh conditions, but moving air is very important to any plants' growth. So do not underestimate a mini fan beside your plant, because it can go a very long way for your plant's health....See MoreMy (not) dead cactus
Comments (9)@GC... let's just say I've been needing to rescue many brown specimens in recent mths :/ not really by choice either @Amy... main stem possibly isn't dead, there could be enough green chlorophyll in new bud to sustain it as a water/nutrient pipe. But it will never regrow its top as that's where these things grow from... your only hope is if it'll sprout another pup on top but unlikely given this time. Also if you disturb it from its soil just for looksee... I don't think that's got enough energy (as a whole) to regrow damaged roots from the bottom. You'd want to just chop & reroot the pup. Hence safest way is to see if pup will bypass root when you bring soil level up to it, whilst still being attached to brown trunk... that's my gutfeel anyway. You've got enough empty depth in pot; if not otherwise I'd pop whole thing as-is into a bigger pot & fillup with coarse sand for a few months. (Or more if it's winter there) & don't water......See MoreNew cactus growing on my dead grafted cactus
Comments (1)The original may have just corked on the bottom? or are you sure it was actually rotting - was it soft? The plant used for rootstock could be hylocereus - pitaya, dragonfruit; it looks like it with those aerial roots. You could let it grow as is on old base or detach and grow separately. These plants send out aerial roots that usually 'search' for more nutrients. You could actually cut them off. The plant grows quite large, usually better if on a trellis, and when mature & large enough it will bloom and may have fruit. For that, it needs longer period of good temps. Good drainage is important as with any succulents. Do not overwater....See MoreMy 150++ YO Christmas Cactus is dead!!!
Comments (1)I know your pain. A long time ago I accidentally killed a very old family cactus. Overwatering in a pot with no drainage hole. I am sorry you lost the plant. I hope someone can help you get one started again....See Morebrainmites
