After much looking, I finally found a Sheffield Daisy at a display garden and garden center in Pennsylvania. Very dependable late-season bloomer here, and I love it. I do cut it back by about 1/3 early in the season to promote bushiness.

Well, the blooms can be controlled to bloom whenever you want really by pinching..... unpinched, early blooms. Late pinched, late blooms.....

But there are varieties that bloom late naturally eg "Mei Kyo".

(I 'pinch' to reduce the size of the plant eg those Minnesota Mammoth Mums are huge....photo to follow).

I think that's correct. Maybe I got lax about pinching, but my sheffields have never been compact by November. Never cared, they are so pretty.

Here is a current picture of our MM ("Dark Pink Daisy") now coming into bloom. It is 4 feet across and 2 feet tall in the middle and yet I sheared it back several times this season and still it is splayed in the middle :(.

The Sheffields in the horticultural park where I worked were never sheared or pinched back (yes, it made me a twitch a little to see them flopping when they could be compact and bushy) and they never bloomed until the trees were in fall color - late October into November. In my home garden today, the buds are still tight and green.

Do you like them? And are yours compact when they finally bloom? Are they the pink ones?

UPDATE:

I can now can see a hint of pink in some of the flower buds of our potted "Mei Kyo", But it looks like it might not be until November for it to be in full bloom.

(I think it is the last perennial for us to bloom for the first time)

Rouge, if that is Mei Kyo, and it survives the winter for you, could you let me have a tiny piece next year? I lost it years ago, and I have not been able to find another one. It was my favourite mum. I once picked a little spray of blooms on Christmas day.

I hope I can remember to post a photo (with the date) when my pot of "Mei Kyo" is in full bloom. From what I see now this won't happen until into November.

Lost mine, I think. Not sure because I had two different divisions just about to bloom and something ate every single bud. I waited 5 months for them to bloom, and in one day, gone! the critters must be getting hungry; they are eating geranium leaves and any blossoms they can find.

Just saw this, Rouge. Beautiful. I looked for the picture of mine on Christmas day. I either took it in my dream, or I I was so impressed with it that I hid it too well. So, no picture, but it happened, not in my dream either ;-). Is yours still going?

Our container "Mei Kyo" wont make it to Christmas (I am putting it in the garage later today to overwinter).

In any event the blooms did get a taste of snow :).

UPDATE (2017):

Same container of our "Mei Kyo". With the warmer and sunnier than usual Fall it is opening way ahead of schedule.

(It is the last perennial in our garden to come into bloom for the first time).

Speaking of 'Sheffield Pink,' (mentioned early in the post) this picture from Garden Design is inspiring, to say the least! From a private garden in NY which opens to the public twice a year. What a treat!

Rouge interesting yours are earlier this year. I was thinking the same for my own late chrysanthemum and now it makes a little more sense that the warm weather had something to do with it. I'll take it!

Rouge, here is the container you gave me last spring. It is doing very well despite a (too) dry period in August, when I was gone for three weeks. I hope to plant it in the garden next spring, I just freed up a spot for it.
