Farruca is a Poulsen rose. The Danish breeder, Poulsen, was very big about 25 years ago in the USA with their new Town and Country line of shrub/landscape roses at the time. They were in hot competition with Meilland landscape roses (France), like Meilland's famous Bonica, which took the rose world by storm then.

I remember Target selling Poulsen roses. I purchased two varieties, whose names escape me. They were rock solid winter hardy (zone5/6 W. PA), heavy bloomers, but fragrant they were not, although sold as such. Not really soul stirring roses, they got shovel pruned. Poulsen roses seemed to fade out of commerce in the USA since then. I am surprised to know of your purchase of your Farrucas. Poulsen must be back in the saddle stateside.

From what I have determined by researching the rose, it could turn out to be a great choice for you, with nice full petaled, rich red blooms that repeat.

Your climbers actually look like they are doing pretty good, in spite of their setbacks. Numerous new green canes, looks like this year's growth, are in evidence.

Although you reported above that they get plenty of sun, your photos show them in shade, which could just be the time of day you took the pictures. Your roses will do their best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, more is even better.

Sometimes roses being planted close to structures like your pillars and the landing means the soil is less than ideal. However, a climber must be planted close to its support structure. Be that as it may, just keep up your fertilization, mulching, watering, etc., on schedule and things should go very well. There's nothing more you can do besides regular good management. Remember to keep them dead headed. They may be producers of hips which would drain the energy to hip production at the expense of blooming.

Climbers, as a class, are extremely tough roses. They have a lot of fight in them. However, they take much more time to establish and put on size than a typical shrub rose bush. This the nature of climbers Go with the flow.

I believe you will have great success with your Farrucas, and see continuous improvements as time goes on.

There was recently a question on attaching a climber to its support on the Roses Forum. You may get some valuable pointers from the responses there.

BTW. The setting of your pillars and arbor overhead is beautiful. I can envision a stunning display when your Farrucas mature.

Your climbers are babies - climbers take 2-3 years to mature, and yours are just still growing roots. I am as well concerned about sunlight - especially at the base of the roses. If there are other plantings which are shading the base of these roses, I would take them out so that the sunlight can hit the bottom of the roses. Also, there appear to be other plants (and perhaps some ivy?) growing right at the base of these roses. Remove ANY plants, weeds, ivy, or anything which is growing within 20 inches of the base of the roses. Then put down about 2 inches of mulch in that area, making sure that the mulch does not touch the base of the rose. I would not fertilize too often.

Are those brown canes dead (brown & brittle, inside brown, not white)? If they are, they should be removed so that there will be space for more new canes.

I agree that they look pretty good for baby climbers.

I forgot to mention that the most likely reasons for your earlier leaf drop are either or all of these three: black spot, spider mites, or heat stress/under watering. Roses are very forgiving, especially climbers that are very robust. Next year, keep an eye out for the above mentioned possibilities and respond ASAP if any problems arise.

As for the ultimate size your Farrucas will reach. It will not surprise me at all if they fill out the space you provided for them very well. It will just take time.

Since they are European bred, foreign bred roses grow in the USA frequently surpass the sizes they reach in Europe. Looking at a map of the world, most of the lower 48 states of the USA are farther south than a good bit of Europe, and consequently not only closer to the sun, but on a more direct sunray angle. This is an important growth rate factor for all plants.

Farruca is listed as being introduced into commerce in 2013. You purchased them last year. Farrucas is a very new rose. It has not really been tested for very long in the USA, and for that matter in Europe either.

I would not replace them. Relax, let them grow and see what they will do. You will be pleasantly surprised.
