Gas grill help

My house came with a gas grill attached to the house's gas line. Just recently I started to give it attention to see if it still worked.

The igniter is dead.

The gas line works like a charm and I was able to scrape some rust away (no idea when the last time it was lit was...wish I had made it part of the closing terms) and get it to light with a lighter.

I'm looking to use lava rocks, I think, to fill it. I guess I'm curious about how a few things...

  • How much do I fill the grill? There are two grates. Fill to the bottom grate? Top grate? Do I need to make a pyramid shape?
  • How do I know when it's ready to cook food? I pour in the rocks, turn the gas up and then what-color change, flames shooting up, smoke?
  • How much use do the rocks get? Are they only good for x amount of time or x number of uses?

I'm admittedly late in the season, but the warm weather is lingering and I'd like to see if I can get this thing going so I know it's ready for next year.

Also, if it matters, it is a Kenmore grill.
