Comments (62)Oh good...more photos on this thread, more inspiration for me! And now I see more pics in the GJ Inspiration Album thanks to you PurpleMoon---I've loving this board! We are hitting two yard sales. One early Friday morning and one early Saturday morning. Both sales list old Garden supplies in their ads ie; rake shovel, wheel barrel etc. I picked up 5 old, 12", terra cotta pots from Craigs List yesterday (a buck apiece) and the guy had an old wheel barrel just sitting at the back of his shed, rusting. I asked if he was planning on selling it and he said "who'd want an old, rusty wheel barrel?" I said "Me!" He said "Why? I told him about all the inspiration I got from a message board online--planting pretty colors or cactus in a wheel barrel and he thought for a minute then said "Well, now that you tell me that, I'm sure when my wife hears, she'll want me to keep it". I've gotta learn to keep my mouth shut. *s*...See Morewheelbarrow flowers and other spring ideas
Comments (11)I had this heavy frosted glass vase sitting in the laundry room collecting dust, so put it outside and threw a tuberous begonia in it. I had to watch how much I watered the plant (no drainage holes) but it was kind of unique. This year I found a small metal vase that was in the clearance section after Christmas, so I may try to use that. As for a plant that doesn't need much space for roots, perhaps "hens and chicks"? If the ornament is clay it might constantly dry out so you might like something that's drought tolerant. Else, portulaca may do well too. I bought this small clay "half pot" from the dollarama. It's like a small clay pot but cut in half with a flat side so you can hang it on a fence. Sort of great to use in an area where to want some color, but no room for a bracket and hanging basket. I wasn't sure what to plant in such a small pot, but portulaca worked very well. I had to water it daily during hot weather and the pot fell apart when I tried to empty the soil in the fall, but for a buck I couldn't complain. Comments (5)I am quite pleased with the way this bed is shaping up. I could use a half dozen or so ;o) more medium or small/medium hostas, but will have to sneak out to get them. DH will start to notice the new additions. I do have some "spare" Purple Palace that would look great with some of the yellow looking hostas, like Kabitan. Next project will be the area where the walk approaches the front door from the drive way. Ummmmm Hostas and a couple of perennials. First must dig out those ugly ewes. Yuck! But after that, let the fun begin. I will post pictures later...need to mulch and need a new battery for my camera. Thanks for all of the advise. Comments (8)I like it too, but I wonder what you'll do in winter to make sure it lives and grows again in spring? (replant it over winter?) I'm in 5a and I don't think anything would survive a winter here in a wheelbarrow. Until this year I've avoided perennials in containers because the thought of how to keep them from dying over winter stresses me out. My first perennials in containers this year are some clematis. I'm also trying to get rid of the undulata around my house because the previous owners planted them and they don't interest me very much....See MoreUser
