Moving and dividing an Annabelle...

I have what I recently learned is an Annabelle Hydrangea.

For the past 20 years, I never really paid attention to it for it was stuck in a corner, close to the foundation of the house, half of it growing under a balcony with only a western light exposure (about 4 hours of afternoon/evening light).

Still, it is large with many stems, but looks dried up with very few little blooms which for the most, never reach full maturity.

Needless to say, without yearly pruning or any care at all, it has been doing poorly all these years and so, I thought is was some kind of weak viburnum...

I'm now moving from this 5b to a 4a zone (Qc.) and would love to bring it with me and make it bigger and better.

Would September be a good time to move this Annabelle and perhaps divide it ?

I'm thinking a move and a division in a new cooler zone might be too much of a shock for this old, badly cared for Annabelle ? (I can wait for Spring if need be, both houses are mine - renting the old one).

Any thoughts on the how to's and location to move it to for best results in a new 4a zone, would be very appreciated...

Thanks a million

Vibi (Qc. moving from 5b to 4a)
