Are dried grass clippings considered a brown/carbon matter?

Hi Everyone,

I have been cold composting this year and had a question about the addition of fresh green matter to a layered pile that is taking a long time to break down.

My base understanding is that compost needs a ratio of brown vs green matter with a layer of dirt and that dried grass clippings become a brown material. Approximately how long does that need for that to happen?

As a side note I waited 3 weeks before turning the pile, then added some chopped up old cucumbers,a sprinkling layer of dirt, then chopped up some parsley, more dirt, then a layered mix of old chopped brown leaves mixed with dried grass clippings, and finally a layer of fresh clippings, dirt, then topped with cut straw and added water.

I believe I should be adding fresh greens on a weekly basis but thought that I should dry out a batch of fresh clippings now until the leaves fall in October. Or is the aged batch of greens in my pile enough to use as a brown layer????

Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!
