Thanks for the answers, The tree is leaning away from the house, we often get 70mph winds here, I'm on a bluff, its not the leaning ones that fall, its the straight ones, no kidding I have never seen a leaning one fall during a storm, even when I loved in South Alabama and one was on a 40 degree angle leaning toward the the house, with roots hanging free in a gully away from the house and the wind blowing it toward the house and the tree at least 4ft in diameter. Although along the road and in the woods hundreds fell all straight ones. I think the leaning ones have better roots toward the lean.

Sorry to disagree gardengal but the term "mushroom" is a colloquial term normally used to denote edible forms of fungus that grow on a stalk, have gills, and a cap of some form. Oxford English Dictionary - "Definition of mushroom - a fungal growth that typically takes the form of a domed cap on a stalk, with gills on the underside of the cap. Many forms of fungus growth do not qualify as "mushrooms" and are potentially deadly. The only forms of Calvatia (puffballs) that are considered safe to consume are those which have a true stalk (the ones Etta posted do not) and are pure white inside when cut open. http://americanmushrooms.com/edibles3.htm Dave

I agree that the one and three look like Russulas. The second looks like a Bolete. If if has spongy tubes rather than gills on the underside, it's almost certainly a bolete. As a rule, Boletes are edible if cooked and: 1) they don't stain blue on cutting and 2) they don't have a red or orange pore surface (the spongy underside where gills would be if the mushroom has gills). There's a bitter bolete that no one knows if is edible or not, as it's so bitter people spit it out. Some people have stomach upsets in response to 'edible' boletes and the inedible ones can make you miserably sick for several days, but you are quite likely to recover fully. Some Russulas are edible, but there are lethally poisonous mushrooms that look similar to many Russulas, so most amateur mushroom hunters avoid them. Mushrooms are so wonderfully varied, it's fun to look them up. I like the Audobon Field Guide to Mushrooms.
