Need suggestions: 4'-5' evergreen to flank oakleaf hydrangea
Comments (10)Great, thanks for the additional suggestions! boxofrox, are your rhodos sited in mostly shade? They're blooming so beautifully! The site I'm filling gets only 2 hours of sun a day. Donnabaskets, my neighborhood has quite a few rhodos and pieris sprinkled here and there---some of them pretty big, and so I assume pretty old. A good sign, I think, that they would be happy in my yard, too. I'll check out your tip about osmanthus, thanks! I like the idea of a variegated shrub because the leaves would light up the shade a bit.... As for planting bulbs, it's very tempting because blooming bulbs would be a nice 'welcome' in the early spring when I come up my driveway. But because the area gets soooo little sun, even in winter (maybe 3 hours daily), I would probably have to replant them every year? I doubt they would get enough sun to have the energy to come back the next spring. That being said, it might be worth making a fresh (small) planting an annual ritual---that way I could change the scheme from year to year....See MoreCan 4 to 5 hours be Full Sun?
Comments (7)Cindy, you will likely find that many, if not most, perennials that call for full sun will do fine in morning sun in the south. Our sunlight is more intense here and the plants appreciate the afternoon shade. Examples are: coneflowers, shastas, rudbeckias, salvias, helianthus, cuphea, heliopsis, and many many more. I even grow zinnias in morning sun with great success. And, many plants that call for part shade will work there too. Just put them closer to the shade source so that they don't get sun for as long....See MoreHydrangea morning shade afternoon sun
Comments (9)Couple of additional points: 1. I observed the spot (west/northwest corner of house) again in more detail; the site is in shade until 12:30, then sun til 4:30, then shade again. So 4 hours of sun. 2. I saw the endless summer at a reputable local nursery, the nursery's label (not the companies) said full to part sun. This seems strange because it significantly differs from everything else. 3. When I bought this house there was an old mophead either right there or nearby, I had to remove everything to do some re-grading of the yard. But I remember they were blue and I don't think reblooming. All that being said, perhaps it's better to go with a mini oak-leaf hydrangea at this spot? Are those easier to grow? thanks...See MoreHydrangea that tolerates afternoon sun only?
Comments (24)Very Nice NHBabs - very nice! Our droughts can last weeks in the Atlanta area but at least we can water, on our watering days up to 10 AM (wet years no one pays attention to these rules). Been here 38 years and have had two summers where we had a total water ban - talk about brutal. We often get sued by AL and FL over the Chattahoochee River so we get a total water ban while AL folks continue watering like its nobody's business (but then they also have the TN River running through the upper end of the state) - not quite fair but what can you do? Use grey water collected in the tub, washing machine, and sinks; AC condensate and hope everything ekes by until the fall rains come in....See Morecearbhaill (zone 6b Eastern Kentucky)
