The doors to the dining room had to be like that because the doors are so narrow - only 17" wide each. I'm not sure that the proposed doors could come in a different size. I think it goes according to the widths of the doors. The demilune is a good idea, but I don't think the style works in this room. However, clipped corners might. I think the biggest challenge now with or without the french doors, is how to put a tv plus sufficient storage on those two walls and have it look right. I think you suggested earlier something shorter and narrower and we will probably have to play with the space to figure it out. I stored photo albums, tv equipment, dishes, glassware, liquor, and a myriad assortment of tablecloths and linens in my previous cabinets. Though I realize I cannot recover quite as much space, it will be important to gain back as much as I can and still have it look attractive. Thanks for helping; it is VERY useful!

Sorry to sound a discordant note, but I personally don't like the French doors at all. I think an arch would be perfect. From the kitchen, the doors seem unnecessary, but more importantly, they would interfere with light unless you added the sidelights, which, as several folks have said, will look pretty busy IRL. But it's the view from the FR that really makes me dislike the doors. Sometimes it's easy to overlook the obvious, and here, the obvious is the fact that you'll have wall after wall after wall of French doors. Together they form an overwhelming block of glass and muntins and frames and grid shapes, with no easy way to soften them (these aren't windows and won't have soft, poofy window treatments). I think they could look even odder IRL. Either you'll have a shade or something on the patio door, and nothing on the others, or you'll leave all three doors nude, which will give you one black door at night and two others that have indoor light behind them. They will look similar, but wrong. Plus, in reality, I find that people actually keep interior french doors closed far less often than they think they will. I think the arch avoids some of these problems. It pierces that corner so that the FR won't feel so much like an isolated addition or a 3-season porch that's been tarted up--instead, it would be connected to the house. And having the curved arch lets you break up that infinite repetition of rectilinear grid, grid, grid without having to add anything. Finally, it will connect the FR and the kitchen with the rest of the house architecturally by repeating a motif you already have. Sorry to add confusion--just my $.02!

Brushworks, thank you very much for your information. I finished sanding with 80 grit sander. Do I need to sand again with 150 grit and 220 grit before applying the primer? Does BM Fresh Start seal and bond well? I am afraid varnish is not 100% clear in some nooks and crannies. Is Ben Moore oil based enamel undercoater a good primer and easy to apply? It helps produce a very smooth surface. I never used oil based paint. Really appreciate your help.

Basically, MDF is less prone to movement(expansion/contraction) due to seasonal temperature changes than solid wood. The construction of a raised panel door necessitated the panel be installed without glue/fasteners to allow for that seasonal movement. An example of allowing =for that movement in a dining room table is when the builder makes slots for the fasteners between the top and base instead of locking the top to the base with screws/glue. However, most MDF will retain moisture when in a wet condition----standing water is a flooded basement---for instance. There is a possibility, IMHO, that dripping water off the counter could land on the panels and seep into the groove made for the raised panel. Enough of that and the MDF would swell, causing the rail to crack. The type of wood used also has a bearing----oak is less absorbent, but looks terrible(IMHO) painted without filling the grain. Maple is good, poplar absorbs moisture more easily. It boils down to the climate and uses in your kitchen to determine the construction materials---as well as your wishes. Sounds to me like you'd rather have the wood---and real wood raised panels for the same price as MDF panels is a good deal----or the MDF panels are way overpriced.
