Need finishing touches in living room
Comments (54)Thanks to everyone for all your help! Yes I am in Louisiana and fans are de rigeur here. But honestly, I never use the fan in the living room except when I mop the floor so it dries faster. Now in the bedrooms, fans are a necessity because I can't sleep without one. I love some of the mockups of the lights. I really think now that removing this "glare bomb" fan will go a long way to reducing the ugly yellowish cast to the room. The fan really does not go with the decor at all. I love transitional style with MCM and even maybe a little Hollywood Regency glamour and chinoiserie mixed in, and that Victorian style fan definitely looks like it belongs in an 1890's parlor! Now I have to find the right light. I really love the look of drum shade pendants, but I have noticed they don't give off that much light because the shade blocks most of it. I guess I will have to start looking. BTW, there is no coral in the rug. It is a brown color. Guess maybe it appears that way in the pictures....See MoreWhat's missing in my living room? Comments (21)Someone said: I believe the Houzz experts (and I am NOT one!) suggest the TV be 2/3 the width of the TV cabinet. No no no no no. The TV cabinet needs to be at least 25% wider than the TV. Wider is always better. There is no minimum size for the TV. Do not hang that guitar between the windows. Do not hang anything between the windows. Your curtains are perfect. Hang the guitar on the wall just left of the TV, get some art for over the sofa, and add just a touch more red to echo the arc lamp (which is tres cool, BTW). You've done a great job so far. You've got this....See MoreSuggestions needed for the (big) final touches of my living-room
Comments (11)I like the bar idea. And I would definitely go with painted cabinets in a rich color to liven up the space. Everything you currently have is either espresso brown or gray, and that gets monotonous pretty quickly. How deep is that space? Because to put a wine/beverage fridge there, you'll need at least 24" but preferably 25" of depth. Here's a bar we did for a client that does not have a wine fridge, but has painted cabinets with glass shelving: Their place is decidedly more rustic than yours, but it just gives you an idea of what can be done. Or you could do something like this with a tile backsplash and open shelving: And FWIW, it doesn't have to be a built in. You could find a nice tall bar cabinet that fits in the space. Comments (15)Shorten your post and put in bold print at the bottom "These sofa's must stay. Non-negotiable. Please only make comments that include these sofas." Otherwise you will continue to get unhelpful comments like the ones below that don't take into account your actual needs. The 3-piece artwork looks small and floating in a vast expanse on the back wall. What if you pushed the sofa that is in front of the paintings slightly closer to the TV, picked up an inexpensive console table to put beneath the 3 rectangular pieces of artwork (from TJ Max or Facebook Marketplace?) Then flanked the console table on either side with a pair of seated arm chairs that could be moved into place when guests are over. Are all of the sofas the same size? It looks like the one closer to the doors is shorter. Any chance they would move the shortest one to a different room and allow for some sturdy arm chairs in that place instead? I don't know if your other relatives who come to visit are older too. These squishy, unsupportive sofas can be very hard on arthritic joints and hard to get in and out of. Perhaps that is why guests are gravitating to the new mystery chair/ Get some C tables to place on the ends of the sofas for drinks. I don't think these overstuffed sofas lend themselves well to accent pillows and throws. The star burst mirror seems hung to high above the mantle. Beefier decor on the mantle will help too. Something that reads well from across the room....See Moreallanaspree
