Household Hints with Hoyas
Comments (22)I would second checking into why home remedies are supposed to work. Then you understand if they are beneficial to you. For example, some people swear by MgSO4. Some people see no effects. If you think about what it does, supply Mg and SO4 then it makes sense. If your culture is lacking in Mg or SO4, then it is beneficial. But if your normal culture is not, then you won't see an effect. Coffee grounds - other than pH adjustment supposedly kills snails and slugs by interfering with their nervous system. And apparently they love it. Superthrive - it is hormones which are extremely unstable and break down in UV (sunlight) and high temps. So if you buy a bottle from the box store where it has been sitting outside in the heat all summer - well, the hormones have broken down. And if you premix up a gallon in a clear plastic bottle, well it is not going to work, the hormones have broken down. But if you get a fresh bottle, keep it in the fridge in the original container - then it will last. Again this may be why some swear by it and some see no effect. The only home remedy I tend to use is aspirin in the winter. My growing conditions in the winter are not optimal so I disolve a little aspirin in the water I use for the plants. Supposedly this boosts their immune and helps them fight off disease. Whether it works or not???? But it doesn't see to hurt. Comments (24)My grandmother did not get into Horchow very often, nor did she buy her clothes at Neiman-Marcus. She made lye soap. She washed her clothes in it and those of my grandfather, their 8 children and many of her 56 grandchildren. She cleaned the butcher house with that lye soap, a house where certain things occurred that some of the delicate-minded would consider murder, but it was survival, food for building muscles for those who worked hard, so that they could live. Fortunately, for her she did not live long enough to witness all this PC madness. She died from working in the cotton fields that had been sprayed with insecticides, bathing with lye soap and putting gray wash water on her garden. They farmed hundreds of acres and since there was not enough water from the pots that held gray water, my grandaddy transported water via horse and buggy. Poor horses. They were fed food from all those fields that were treated with insecticides. He too, died, before all this madness. My grandmother died at the tender age of 89 from emphysema and incidentally she had never smoked, was not married to a smoker and none of her children smoked, and none of their friends back then smoked. They were very pious and pure, no alcohol and no tobacco, and had no idea about drugs. My grandfather was killed by a young protester, high on pot, who lost control of his vehicle, and hit my little grandaddy as he was driving to start his day and open up his little neighborhood grocery store that he had been running for years, when at the ripe old age of 99, he died. It's a shame they used all those insecticides and lye, or they might have lived to see the downfall of this country....See MoreSavings achieved in daily household routine
Comments (83)I could almost have avoided buying radish seed this spring, for there were quite a few radishes about an inch high in the fall, volunteering from the radishes that had gone to seed earlier. There are a good deal many more this spring ... and some from the area where the radishes were, the year before. Anyone want some radish seeds? I have a few lettuce plants starting on their own, as well. Last year had quite a few zucchini from the ones that had spoiled that I threw directly on to the garden rather than into compost ... plus some volunteer tomato plants in a part of the garden where they were not planted, as well. I had about 60 some asparagus plants, last year ... but the landlord nicked some when he ran the tiller down the rows, last summer. And this spring when he did the initial tilling, to chew up the residues from last year and let the chewed up pieces start to rot ... he nicked a fair chunk of one row. Plus some died, I think ... so I think that I have only about half as many plants, now. Quite a few more seeds, so will fill in the blank spaces (but will need to mark them, as they'll need to be transplanted later than the originals). I save some of the first run of cold water out of the hot water tap in the bathroom/kitchen to water the cats, as well as flush the toilet. You guys in the sunny south-west should do a lot of that, cause you sure are short of water. They had a note on the radio the other day that they're worried that the rivers in rather dry Alberta are polluted now, and the flow is largely allocated ... ... so if some of you come wanting us to ship some down the trench between the mountains to California, Arizona, etc. ... we may be tellling you to get lost! The glaciers that feed them have been shrinking ... and if (when?) they die, Calgary may be crying big time for water, themselves. Have yourselves a lovely spring, everyone ... it's getting so that one can drop most of the winter clothing sometimes, in the last few days ... sort of a relief, that. ole joyful...See MoreUseful Info on Household products
Comments (8)They don't all apply to me, but i've taken note to a few. Thanks. A product I use different than the way it was intended is, I get dry scaly patches on my forehead and on the side of my nose. I tried a lot of OTC things, but one day I thought it looked like dandruff, even though I didn't have it on my head. So I rub some dandruff shampoo, full strength, on the area, let it sit for a couple minutes, then rinse it off. It went away on a couple days. Now I do the treatment a couple times a week, and it stays away. I had a couple weeks, a while ago when I was sick and didn't do it, and sure enough the scaly stuff was coming back. I've often wondered if it would work on psoriasis, at least mild cases....See More4boys2
